MY HEALTH RECOVERY: The butterfly effect is the belief that small changes over time can create huge life changes.

When I am not busy with my other life responsibilities I like to use the creative side of my brain to keep it active.  I painted this saying on an old picture from a thrift shop. I hope that it inspires you to belief and expect more is possible in terms of your health.

My recovery from multiple health challenges (environmental illness – EI, toxicant induced loss of tolerance – TILT, multiple chemical sensitivities – MCS, chronic fatigue – CF, severe gastrointestinal distress, irritable bowel – IB, stress sensitization, major depression, spasmodic dysphonis – SD) has taken a long time. The good news is that I now have good health and I can live and function in the real world and work.

My recovery path took many small changes over time and the resulting end product – good health, still amazes me at times; especially when I see other people still struggling with diagnoses that they were given decades ago.

Aging is an inevitable reality for all of us. Research shows that people are living longer and that healthy longevity is a common goal for many. Understanding the ingredients for healthy longevity can be confusing.  Social media, health publications, television, the internet and the fitness industry present the aging population with many ‘fountain of youth’ offerings. It can be confusing to wade through all of the claims and hype to determine truths from myths. I can assure you that you will not find it in a supplement, although at times therapeutically beneficial. How does one make an informed decision on the right path to take to achieve one’s healthy aging goals and ensure comfortable ‘last chapters’?

Over many decades I have watched family members, loved one and community members enter the last chapters of their lives often incapacitated by disease and fraught with terrible suffering. Scientists researching longevity have discovered areas of the world where people are the healthiest and live the longest.  The National Geographic documents the study of the ‘blue zones’ of the world and what they have determined are the ingredients of healthy longevity. Lessons from these areas, the ‘blue zones’ tell us there are nine common principles (Power 9) that the people in these areas follow to achieve their healthy longevity. The take away from the study is that these principles can be used anywhere in the world as a ‘reverse engineering longevity’ protocol. Can one achieve the same healthy longevity results by duplicating the nine principles in other parts of the world?  Are there additional strategies that need to be incorporated to achieve the same level of success?

As a holistic wellness practitioner I am delighted to incorporate the Power 9 principles into my own life and share them with my clients.  I have always been able to see firsthand that changes in diet and lifestyle are major necessary determinants for improved health. Working with people of all ages who live far away from the ‘blue zones’ in the westernized world, I see a great need to implement additional strategies to restore, improve and maintain good health. Living in a fast passed society that is constantly challenging our ‘life balance’, stress idling, breathing polluted air, drinking polluted water, eating nutrient compromised, processed and fast foods that are altered and filled with additives, using personal care, cleaning and gardening products full of synthetic and toxic chemicals – all contribute to body pollution with potential interference, malfunction, damage and increased health risks and conditions.

For many years I have worked with clients using a holistic ‘stop, start and change’ protocol (my road map) to help them achieve their health goals. Many of my clients have now reached the age of maturity with an ongoing goal of maximizing healthy longevity and avoid ‘end of life’ suffering. My recommendations to my clients and anyone who asks me for advice has always been to follow my Path to ‘healthy longevity’ recommendations listed in my poster below. I now also highly recommend the blue zones Power 9 strategies as a ‘must add’.

NATURAL MORPHINE ALTERNATIVE: A Natural Liver Friendly Remedy That Really Works

I was visiting family recently when I fell and suffered from a very bad and painful sprained ankle.  I had been sitting in a chair reading and got up and took one step forward, not realizing that my foot had fallen asleep.  My asleep foot, which I thought I led with, was limp and dragged backwards as I moved forward.  I lost my balance and the ankle landed on a very hard wooden corner of a game on the floor. As my total body weight went into free fall and landed I heard a crunch, much like the one you hear at a chiropractic adjustment. I was terrified that I had a really bad break. The agony that followed surpassed anything I experienced in child birth, five times. I had sprained my ankle in the past but this was different because I landed on a hard sharp corner. I was in excruciating pain and found myself panting like I did in labour many years ago.

As a holistic wellness practitioner I have various tools that I use to help clients with symptom relief. The natural strategies are not always brought in as first aid or for severe health crisis situations. Since I tend to avoid emergency rooms if at all possible, and it was a busy summer weekend and I was in no position to even get into a car; I decided to use all the tools in my ‘holistic medical bag’ as a first resort and to get to a point where I could catch a breath and reassess.

#2 – Elevated my foot and applied ice.

#3 – Visualized all of my ankle and foot bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles mended and in the proper location. Since I do energy therapies on clients to realign ‘out of position’ body parts, I knew it was possible to get everything back into it’s original place. Besides that I was terrified that it was all broken into pieces and I needed to fix it. #4 – My mind went to what essential oil do I use for this.  I vaguely remember my daughter Amanda talk about something to use for pain.  I wasn’t able to think straight because of the pain.  I had a resource book somewhere, but no time, no ability to focus to read or easy access. Once I was able to catch a breath I texted my daughter. While I waited for her to reply I though I could use muscle response testing to test the oils I had with me (which I asked someone to bring to me), but I was in too much pain; I would not be able to do the testing.  My daughter suggested five essential oils. I recognized the one oil, marjoram which I had with me, and that had worked so well for sharp back pain in the past; so used it liberally all over my ankle and foot. It is apparently part of what is considered by some people a natural ‘morphine shot’ and I can tell you it was amazing topically.  Much like a topical anesthetic. #5 – Wrapped my ankle in a tension bandage.

My ‘mishap’ had occurred in the morning. I spent the rest of the day with my foot up, icing it, visualizing and applying marjoram. That night my son asked if I would like some Tylenol for overnight.  In the past I would have considered Tylenol Extra Strength (caplets) in times of pain but he only had the gel caps with dye in it, which I definitely avoid.  You can read about the ‘non liver friendly’ ingredients here. Healthy longevity requires a healthy liver so I try really hard to avoid synthetic and harmful ingredients in foods, and medications generally. I was amazed when I woke up in the night to the sounds from my grand daughter in the room, that I had been able to sleep. I reapplied the oil, rewrapped my ankle and went back to sleep until morning.

I am amazed at how well I was able to manage the pain with the marjoram essential oil and additional natural therapies.

PROTECTING THE MOST VULNERABLE: Improving Prenatal Environmental Health Education

The Prenatal Environmental Health Forum, PEHE, held at the University of Ottawa on November 20 and 21 provided a discussion opportunity for obstetricians, gynecologist, physicians, nurses ( +public health), midwives, educators and other practitioners to implement strategies to educate pregnant and nursing women and their families about harmful environmental exposures. Little things matter: The impact of toxins on the developing brain. That was the title of the video presented by Dr. Bruce Lanphear, BC Children’s Hospital and Faculty of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University at the PEHE forum. The strategies in the preceding poem were, in the not so distant past, prescribed strategies for the sick. Many doctors were heard to order their patients to ‘drink plenty of fluids and rest in bed’.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, was quoted to say; “Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.”

Your complex body was created by God (your Creator) with many amazing abilities. Every moment of every day, without any action on your part there are hundreds of processes taking place and abilities available to you, even while you are asleep. The healthy human organism, with its complex high-tech operating system; is continually self-detecting, self-diagnosing, self-renewing, self-healing, self-repairing, self-cleaning and self-protecting. The human body has an internal pharmacy, which when functioning properly produces natural analgesic, anti-depressant, anti-anxiety, anti-stress, sleep-inducing, immune system strengthening and gastrointestinal normalizing chemicals.[1]  Many of the body’s processes and abilities are automatic and are often taken for granted.

  • Loss of memory or concentration
  • Sore throat
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in your neck or armpits
  • Unexplained muscle pain
  • Pain that moves from one joint to another without swelling or redness
  • Headache of a new type, pattern or severity
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Extreme exhaustion lasting more than 24 hours after physical or mental exercise

I still remember clearly suffering from and being diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms. There were times that I could barely crawl, I was so weak. I felt awful all the time. Chronic fatigue symptoms can be a part of other health conditions and diagnoses.

I tried many conventional and non conventional approaches in my quest for symptom free status.  The most significant improvement in my condition in the past was ‘determining my weak list’.

What does a weak list mean?

Sometimes it means you are allergic to the items. The resulting biofeedback ‘weak response’ can be indicative of an association your body has made about a product, substance or situation in the past at a time of extreme trauma or duress. A ‘weak response’ can also mean that something is going on in the body at this time, which added to the use of the product or substance or recall of a past similar association; is a temporary bad combination (e.g. during detoxification, rapid growth, healing, recovery, hormone change, distress, treatment, medications, your body’s present chemical equation). Generally speaking it means that the item or factor is causing confusion, interference, imbalance, malfunction or damage. Sometimes it is to the immune system, sometimes to the nervous, endocrine or other systems, and sometimes to the liver or heart; all necessary to stay strong and healthy. If this happens on a daily/weakly basis the results can be catastrophic.

How do you get your weak list? 

The best way to get an unbiased weak list is to have a qualified practitioner provide you with the information. The ideal person is someone who has nothing to gain or lose by the results (e.g. sale of products). All you are looking for is a list of items or factors that cause weakness. You will use that information to avoid; so your body can rebound. The next step is to learn muscle response testing so that you have the tools to assess potential ‘weakening’ items or factors ongoing. Learning and using muscle response testing basically saved my life and allowed my body to rest. By avoiding everything on my weak lists my body focused its energies on healing and repair instead of vigilance and protection.

p.s. If a weakening item turns out to be something you absolutely can not avoid (e.g. medications for HIV or Aids), there is a way.  I have developed a protection technique that I teach clients so that the offending item or factor does not cause weakness (an override). Understandably you would not be able to do this with every item on your list. The protection sequence details can be found in my book THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION.
