Working with many clients with various diagnoses over many years has provided me with many insights.  My own personal health challenges in the past due to toxicant induced loss of tolerance (TILT) and resulting MCS, depression, EI, chronic fatigue, SD had prompted me to ‘go green’ many years ago.  Avoiding harmful toxins and substances in my diet, personal care products, pain and symptom management, house and garden products were a necessity for me to recover and I now enjoy good health. My informed knowledge and vigilance about toxins in my products and environments keeps me healthier.  My liver and brain are also less challenged now that I have cleaned up my products and environments, a real ‘health’ win!

How do you Go Green ‘for a healthier you’?

  • Green your diet – avoid additives, pesticides and other contaminants.  Buy organic when possible.
  • Green your personal care, household and other products – check out the ingredients of your present products at the EWG Skin Deep Database and then make a healthier choice. THE GIFT of a Healthy Brain: Strategies to Protect and Restore Optimum Brain Function

As many of my friends, family and clients know, I have had my brain challenges.  The good news is that my brain now functions better than it ever has before and I intend to make sure it stays that way.

My past periods of depression and compromised brain function were the result of various factors including, body and brain pollution from toxins, toxicant induced loss of tolerance (TILT), stress and stress sensitization, and lack of resilience.  You can read about how I was affected by all of these in my blog posts and website ‘about‘ page. I am grateful for the information, guidance and natural strategies that have helped to restore my brain health.

With the looming statistics for dementia, which my mother suffered from, and Alzheimers, my focus moving forward is on preventing mental decline as I age.

Japanese scientists have isolated active compounds in several plant medicines. These techniques helped the scientists identify and isolate active compounds found in Drynaria rhizome, a plant medicine that can improve memory. It has been proven to reduce disease characteristics in mice models with Alzheimer’s disease.

A 2012 study shows that rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), a common plant used to distil essential oil, can also help improve cognitive performance in healthy adults. Also, rosemary can boost brain performance.

In another study in 2013, scientists found that rosemary may enhance the ability to remember events. Also, it helps people keep future tasks in mind. Since memory loss is one of the hallmark symptoms of dementia, this function could make rosemary oil and important component of therapy to combat dementia.

Scientists also found that six essential oils, namely thyme, rose, clove, eucalyptus, bergamot and fennel, are capable of suppressing the inflammatory COX-2 enzyme. The effect is similar to that of resveratrol, one of the important compounds that gives red wine its health benefits.

Of all the essential oils, thyme produces the highest reduction in COX-2 levels by about 75 percent. The other essential oils reduced the COX-2 level by 25 percent.  EO, as one of the effective constituents of natural plants, is more and more recognized by people for its medicinal value and health care value. Through the analysis of different pathogenic mechanisms of AD, the anti-oxidation of EO against acetylcholinesterase inhibition, Aβ depolymerization, free radical injury and the protection of PC12 injured cells, it can be seen that EO of various plants has the activity of preventing and treating AD. The use of EO has many kinds of ways, such as oral administration, fumigation, smearing and so on. Combined with its excellent anti-AD activity, EO has the potential value of developing natural drugs for the treatment of neurogenic diseases. Moving forward, my brain protection strategy includes the essential oil brain protection blend below.  Read the research information above to determine which oils you feel you should add to your personal blend:

My Dementia and Alzeihmer’s Neuroprotective Blend

  • Frankincense – 4 drops (abates age related dendritic regression in the hipppocampus, anti-cancer )
  • Clove bud – 2 drops (reverses memory and learning deficits, anti-cancer)
  • Rosemary – 5 drops (improves cognitive performance, abates age related dendritic regression in the hipppocampus, anti-cancer)
  • Copaiba – 2 drops (neuroprotective)
  • Melissa – 5 drops  (neuroprotective, anti-cancer – glioblastoma)
  • Lemongrass – 4 drops (neuroprotective)
  • Lavender – 4 drops (calming)
  • Add the preceding drops to a 10 ml roller ball bottle and top up with Fractionated Coconut Oil or a mix of grapeseed/olive oil. Apply to the toes (brain reflexology points) and brain stem twice daily.

SKIN CANCER PREVENTION & PROTECTION: How I Stack My Odds!

healthyskinSkin cancer is on the rise.  It is a subject that I have tried very hard to avoid think about in recent years.  The reality is, we are all vulnerable.  More so if we spent years bathing in the sun or tanning beds. Because of the loss of a dear friend and my husband to melanoma in the past, and the recurring melanoma diagnoses over the years in our extended family; skin cancer it is upfront and personal for me. Those who know me know that I am constantly searching for information on cancer prevention and cancer fighting therapies. As we all know prevention is the best insurance against receiving a skin cancer or any cancer diagnosis.  Have any suspicious skin spots, or moles that others consider suspicious, examined by a qualified healthcare practitioner. Below are the strategies that I have researched and implemented and recommend to my clients and those who ask.

  1. SUN PROTECTION & ANTIOXIDANTS: Life Saving Measures – I wrote this post in May 2013 so will not rewrite the information in it here. Click on the link to read this post which contains names of sunscreens that are considered to be safer in terms of non-toxic ingredients without compromised protection.
  2. SKIN CANCER: Increasing Antioxidants At The Skin Level – I wrote this post in October of 2014 so click on the link to read it.
  3. My skin cancer protection is a combination of rosemary, frankincense, clove, sandalwood and grapeseed/olive oil. You can read the scientific research behind my essential oil selection in the previous blog post #1 and #2 as well in my blog post FRANKINCENSE – POTENTIAL CANCER THERAPY RESEARCH: A Modern Day Gift of the Magi. Research shows that rosemary reduces melanoma cancer cell proliferation. Research shows that α-Santalol (found in Sandalwood essential oil) has been shown to suppress proliferation of non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancer cells in culture.

Skin Cancer Protection Recipe:

I use a 50 ml glass pump bottle for my skin cancer protection blend.  You will have to experiment with the oils to see how many drops work best for you. Every person’s skin is different. Listen to your intuition. My recommended recipe is one drop of the clove, 4 drops of the frankincense, 2 drops of the rosemary, 2 drops of sandalwood and then top up with grapeseed/olive oil.  Get started today using pure therapeutic grade essential oils for healthy skin protection. 4.  Eat a plant based diet. I made this choice initially due to the National Geographic research on the people who live in the Blue Zones of the world who live the longest and healthiest.
The Blue Zones website has developed nine reverse engineering longevity strategies or lessons that you can follow wherever you live.  I have seen so many loved ones suffer in their final years that I wanted a better outcome. There are some interesting statistics on melanoma cancer outcomes for patients who adapted a plant based diet in combination with treatments. 5Detox regularly.  Eating healthy is a start for ongoing natural detoxification promotion. I continue to use my Botanical Spa Therapy whole body detoxification bath recipe (which can be found in my book) occasionally as well as my detoxification tea mix of dandelion root, cleavers and milk thistle plant. Dandelion root has been found to induce melanoma and other cancer cell death. 6. Customized visualizations to improve immunosurveillance, immunofocus,  immunoresponse and apoptosis.  You have great power to change your cells including your dna using visualization.  Read the amazing research on the power of visualization at the Heart Math Institute. 7. Learn how to use The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

to reverse your health challenges and have a more fulfilling life. Whatever image you put into your subconscious mind is used to direct your body’s response. Author Joseph Murphy writes about his recovery from a malignancy of the skin in the Chapter 3 section The Subconscious Heals A Malignancy of The Skin, page 55 to 56.

STOP, START and CHANGE: Strategies for a healthier you this year!

Every new year usually comes with thoughts of ‘what do I need to stop, start or change’ for a healthier me? The possibilities are vast. Where do you begin? Social media offers a non-stop stream of ‘must do’ suggestions to get you healthy. There are many opinions on what is best for you on social media, magazines, the news and books. Keep in mind that you are unique and as such may need a more customized approach.

My recommendations to get you started on a healthier you this year:

Learn strategies from the places in the world where people live the longest and healthiest.  By the way; they do not go to the gym and work out or take mega supplements.  Eating a plant based diet comes with many health benefits and research has shown that it can reverse disease like heart disease, diabetes and cancer.   • Whatever your health challenges, reading the right books can be a great well-being resource. ESSENTIAL OILS APOTHECARY STATION DIY: Bath, Body & Home

I have so many wonderful essential oils and during the holidays is the perfect time to share them. The challenge to sharing my oils when company is over is that I am usually super busy with cooking and socializing. I decided to set up a small essential oils sample depot in my bathroom so that visitors could sample themselves.  I have a ‘take a sample’ sign on the tray so visitors know that they are welcome to take without asking.The labels were created using an Avery template 22804 glossy white labels found at Staples.  The templates can be found at https://www.avery.ca/design-and-print-online/.  You can also use the sample display just to display your essential oils collection and change the sign to say ‘ask me for a sample’.

My spritz bottle labels included Sweet Dreams, Safeguard, Chill Out,  and Fresh Air. I plan to do a few inhalers with my labels Cheer Up and Get Motivated. The spray samples can sprayed on pillows, scarves, clothing or into the air.

I use only pure essential oils. The bottles are empties, a great way to recycle.  The spray tops come from My Essential Business https://mebcanada.ca/shop/product/mister-top-for-15-ml-30-ml-bottles-5082.  I customize how many drops and add distilled water so the oils do not sit on top of the water.  It is important to shake the bottles often before spraying. The Apothecary Sign came from a download. I opened it in paint and erased the ‘downtown’, added a text box and added Essential Oils. I changed it to transparent and saved it. Next went to Word and added parchment paper image for the page background in word, inserted the image enlarging to fit the page and printed. Voila!

Last night’s news story about Canada’s garbage crisis refocused my already overwhelming concerns about the amount of waste that we as a generation produce on a daily basis.  I am a big fan of reduce, reuse and recycle, and reducing my environmental footprint. INDOOR AIR QUALITY: A Potential for Compromised Brain, Nervous System and Overall Health

Fall brings cooler temperatures yet maybe not cool enough to turn your furnace on. One of the challenges during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall is to maintain good indoor air quality. While a furnace is functioning there is usually a fresh air intake from the outside. During the shoulder seasons and for some all year, while you are using other forms of heating such as fireplaces, wood stoves, electric heaters (baseboards) or water boiler heating – your home is not receiving daily infusions of fresh air. The resulting accumulation of poor indoor air from painting, paint stripping, heating with kerosene heaters, cooking, daily activities or engaging in maintenance and hobby activities; can come with serious health challenges including compromised brain and nervous system function. To maintain optimum health it is important to lower the concentrations of indoor air pollutants in your home and to increase the amount of outdoor air coming indoors. So open your windows often, especially during shoulder seasons to clean your air and all year if your do not have a heating system with fresh indoor air intake. Run your furnace fan on auto to circulate the fresh air that you take in. Make sure your furnace has an external fresh air intake. I have personally spent years improving my brain function after some serious brain trauma.  Exposing my brain to toxic chemicals, heavy metals and chronic stress in the past had a disastrous impact on my brain and nervous system; and every function they were responsible for.
