BLACK CURRANT: A Healthy Food Choice

blackcurrant

Black currants, also known as ribes nigrum (Grossulariaceae), are a powerful super food. The fruit bearing shrub is native to the temperate regions of Europe, western and central Asia and the Himalayas. As I was growing up we always had a row of black currant bushes in our south western Ontario garden. My mother made black currant jelly from the berries. It was our job as children to pick them. There wasn’t a concern about us eating too many as we picked; they are pretty tart. The leaves are used to make teas.

Health benefits of black currants:

  • High in anti-oxidants; required daily to replenish stores.
  • High in the photochemical anthocyanins; beneficial against cancer, aging, inflammation and neurological diseases (dementia, Alzheimer’s)
  • High in Vitamin C; an important free radical scavenger and infectious disease fighter.
  • Good source of Vitamin A and flavonoid antioxidants important for healthy eye sight, skin and mucous membranes.
  • Rich in Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), Vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine) and Vitamin B-1 (thiamine); vitamins the body needs daily for proper function.
  • Good source of iron; needed for red blood cell production.
  • Good source of copper, calcium, phosphorus, manganese, magnesium and potassium; minerals required daily for healthy body function.
  • Used therapeutically to prevent cardiac insufficiency and for improved circulation.
  • A natural diuretic.

How to get the health benefits of black currants:

    • Fresh and frozen whole berries.
    • Black currant tea.
    • Black currant jelly or jam. (my favourite is St. Dalfour Black Currant 100% Fruit Spread from France which is sweetened with grape juice concentrate)
    • Black currant wine.
    • Black currant salad dressing. ( I use a small amount of the St. Dalfour black currant spread with organic olive oil and balsamic vinegar)

I consider black currants a MUST HAVE super food to keep stocked in the refrigerator. Black current tea is a MUST HAVE pantry staple.

I include many health promoting strategies and a complete list of super foods to stock your pantry and refrigerator in my book THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION. For more of my ‘how to become well’ books visit my book page at www.mybodycanhealitself.ca/books.htm.

BOOKS: A Necessary Well-being Tool

books

My journey to improved health consisted of consulting various conventional and non conventional health practitioners, trying recommended and advertised ‘cures’, researching credible information sources and reading books by innovative and caring thinkers.

I now have quite a library of books and bookmarked sites that reflect the vast collection of information I have read and that is stored in my head.

If you are not reading articles and books, either from credible internet sources or authors; you are being deprived of a necessary tool for well-being. Although reading fiction comes with its own benefits, non-fiction books, including self-help books,  provide a wealth of inspirational and health promoting material. Books of quotes and funny stories can lift your spirits. So, even if you are not a reader; consider adding reading as a well-being tool. It could change your health and your life.

Here are a few of what I consider must reads for improved health:

Buddha’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom by Rick Hanson

THE WEAK LIST: A Necessary Well-being Tool

hands

When my immune and nervous systems crashed many years ago, I suffered from multiple unexplained symptoms and was extremely weak. There were times that all I could do was crawl. Although I had my symptoms investigated by my doctor and other doctors; there was no cause determined.  I was prescribed medication which did nothing to relieve my symptoms.

I did a lot of research in my quest for answers and recovery. Everything I ate caused me extreme gastrointestinal distress. I lost a great deal of weight in a short period of time.  I would doubled over in pain after eating everything. I realized that some foods caused me more distress than others so I decided to have a blood test done to determine if food allergies could be the cause. The blood test revealed that I was reacting (I call it a skewed response) to 80+ foods. That list of offending foods became my first ‘weak list’, WEAK LIST #1. It was a Godsend! I immediately stopped eating everything on the list. Within 3 days my gastrointestinal symptoms started to subside and some of my energy started to come back.

As time went on I learned a lot about allergies; what causes them and how to deal with them. I was concerned that if I ate out (including family events) I would not be able to determine if the foods I was eating were safe; so I learned muscle response testing to discreetly test the foods before I ate them. Learning how to use this tool has basically saved my life. It allowed my body to focus my energies on healing and repair instead of vigilance and reacting.

Muscle response testing is a form of neuromuscularbiofeedback, a biofeedback testing method. It uses feedback from the body and brain (your virtual black box) as information.  Other forms of biofeedback include taking a pulse, taking a blood pressure and listening to the heart with a stethoscope.” In the 1950s, Dr. Arthur Coca identified that his wife’s heart rate would increase if she ate a food that provoked an inappropriate or allergic response. This was, as Dr. Coca put it, ‘accidentally acquired knowledge’ which he then applied to patients as well as his wife. The results were very effective and consistent.”  Similarly muscle response testing provides information about foods and substances ingested, inhaled and applied to the body as well as environmental factors.

Once I mastered the muscle response testing I used it to test the products I was using; the water I drank and bathed in and the air I breathed in my different environments. The results of testing these using muscle response testing provided me with my second weak list, WEAK LIST #2.

Making changes in my diet, home, environments and life so that I could avoid WEAK LIST #1 AND #2; were major assets in my recovery.  My body stopped the vigilance and reacting and concentrated its energies on healing, repair and energy production. Dealing with my body pollution and challenged liver was a major part of my recover.

As a holistic wellness practitioner I provide my clients with their WEAK LISTS using neuromuscular biofeedback – a ‘health forensics’ investigation. The list provides a combination of ‘stop, start and change’ recommendations based on the biofeedback information. Once they avoid or change the items on their weak lists; their symptoms usually start to subside, allowing their health to return. I also counsel them on detoxifying their body pollution and supporting healthy liver function – a must for healthy longevity and achieving symptom free status.

Sounds simple, I know; but it works. It is not immediate, it does take time. Weak list items can be physical, mental, emotional or spiritual factors, or combinations of these. Sometimes these items are factors that interfere with normal healthy body communication and function

For anyone suffering from chronic or life threatening conditions and disease (especially cancer); determining a WEAK LIST is mandatory to recovery. Determining and addressing your ‘weak list’ can allow you to maintain a strong immune system and body, and become and stay ‘symptom free’. Avoiding the items on the weak lists, by substituting ‘non weak’ items, can allow energy and health to return. Many items found on a weak list interfere with immunosurveillance (critical for those fighting diseases, including cancer) and normal healthy communication and response, including immune system response.  Curious about what items are on your ‘weak list’ and causing your symptoms/condition or affecting your well-being?

What does a weak list mean?

Sometimes it means you are allergic to the items. The resulting biofeedback ‘weak response’ can be indicative of an association your body has made about a product, substance or situation in the past at a time of extreme trauma or duress. A ‘weak response’ can also mean that something is going on in the body at this time, which added to the use of the product or substance or recall of a past similar association (from your body’s ‘black box’); is a temporary bad combination (e.g. during detoxification, rapid growth, healing, recovery, hormone change, distress, treatment, medications, your body’s present chemical equation). Generally speaking it means that the item or factor is causing confusion, interference (body communication), imbalance, disruption (of brain and body chemistry), malfunction or damage. Sometimes it is to the immune system, sometimes to the nervous, endocrine or other systems, and sometimes to the liver or heart; all necessary to stay strong and healthy. If this happens on a daily/weakly basis the results can be catastrophic. Daily consumption, inhalation or absorption of neurotoxins can cause daily weakness to the body and dire consequences.  Studies have shown that neurotoxins can shorten the life span of nerve cells. These toxins have been linked to brain disorders and neurodegenerative disease, such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s Chorea and Parkinson’s. For information on some neurotoxins responsible for causing weakness, interference and malfunction in your body, resulting in unwanted symptoms, visit http://energyfanatics.com/2010/05/02/ten-neurotoxins-you-should-avoid/.

If for some reason your body has collected information from your past and has saved it in ‘history’ (your body’s virtual black box) and has given it ‘added value’ (e.g. bee sting, peanut, scent) – your body may present with a weak response in present time when your brain/body makes an association based on the history and stored information.

How do you get your weak list? The best way to get an unbiased weak list is to have a qualified practitioner provide you with the information. The ideal person is someone who has nothing to gain or lose by the results (e.g. sale of products). All you are looking for is a list of items or factors that cause weakness. You will use that information to avoid; so your body can rebound. The next step is to learn muscle response testing so that you have the tools to assess potential ‘weakening’ items or factors ongoing, on a daily basis. Muscle response testing is a valuable tool that can contribute to  Healthy longevity.

Where do you start?

  1. Book a BodyFeedback™ Interview & Therapy session or other neuromuscular biofeedback assessment today. You take your vehicle in for regular inspection and maintenance, doesn’t your body deserve the same attention and care?
  2. Learn how to determine your ‘weak list’ by doing muscle response testing. You can start with the Muscle Response Testing for Beginners e-book or book a private or group workshop by contacting me at elisabethlhines@gmail.com or join us at a workshop or event.

I guarantee that if you determine your WEAK LISTS and avoid/deal with those items and factors; your health can be restored. Your body will focus its attention on healing and repair instead of vigilance and protection. I am now able to eat all foods in any restaurant or be in any environment (including perfume counters) without fear or reactions.  Let us help you transition to 100% symptom free and healthy longevity.

P.S. If a weakening item turns out to be something you absolutely can not avoid (e.g. medications with harmful side effects for diseases, HIV or Aids), there is a way.  I have developed a protection technique that I teach clients so that the offending item or factor does not cause weakness (an override). Understandably you would not be able to do this for every item on your list. The protection sequence details can be found in my book THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION.

PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION: Organic Quinoa

Quinoa is an ancient grain (seed) super food with many health benefits.

  • A high quality protein source with nine essential amino acids. It has more protein than rice, millet or wheat.
  • High in riboflavin.
  • Non fattening – 170 calories per ¼ cup of dry ( 24 protein, 12 sugars, complex carbohydrates with a low glycemic index, fiber and healthy fat)
  • Gluten free.

There are three main varieties of quinoa: light yellow, red and black. The seeds need to be rinsed to remove the soapy saponin residue. Quinoa is a very versatile protein food; it can be used in salads, as porridge and is made into flour and pasta.

I use the tru-Roots Organic Quinoa which is certified non-GMO.  It comes pre-washed and cooks in 15 minutes. Instead of water I add organic vegetable broth for more flavour. Chopped vegetables and a variety of dressings create a complete meal which stores well in the refrigerator for several days.

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH: Look Within

“Fountain of Youth
 – a fountain described in folk tales as able to make people young again”

fountain-flowing

People have been searching for the fountain of youth since the beginning of time. “Ponce de Leon discovered Florida while searching for the Fountain of Youth”. Others travel to the ‘blue zones’ of the world that possess age defying mysteries. Although visits to warmer, sunnier climates provide many health benefits; the real fountain of youth lies within.

Restoring and maintaining homeostasis on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level is a pre-requisite to defy aging. On a daily basis your body is exposed to many factors that cause imbalance and free radical damage; which overwhelms the body’s antioxidant defences and stores. Stressors, with their accompanying dose of stress hormones generate free radicals. If you live in polluted environments your antioxidant stores can be depleted in a number of hours.

The human body has many amazing protective and rejuvenating abilities that can be utilized to defy aging. The best way to fend off aging’s debilitating effects:

  • Focus on restoring and maintaining balance in your life and body.
  • Prevent free radical damage by protecting you, your DNA (preventing mutations)and your stem cells.
  • Build up and regularly replenish your antioxidant stores through a diet rich in super foods.
  • Use DNA repair foods to repair damage caused by free radicals.
  • Learn how to use natural DNA repair strategies to repair damage caused by free radicals.

DETOXIFICATION: A Natural Body Process That May Need Some Help

“GOD made the earth yield healing herbs, which the prudent man should not neglect”.

Ecclesiastes 38:4

herbs

Detoxification is a naturally occurring process that takes place in the body automatically on an ongoing basis. So why is everyone considering detox strategies?  Should you? The finely tuned orchestra of detection, identification, communication and responding that are critical for optimum and effective detoxification can become compromised.  Interference, malfunction or damage resulting from multiple sources, including stressors, can seriously hamper natural detoxification.

There are many self-help strategies that you can implement to promote natural detoxification. I list these in my book, THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION. Adding herbs to your diet is one way to encourage detoxification of toxins and heavy metals from your body.

  • Horsetail binds with lead
  • Bladderwrack and turmeric bind with aluminum
  • Cilantro, chlorella and turmeric bind with mercury

Additional herbs bind with developmental toxins, hormone disruptors and carcinogenic chemicals. My research and study of herbs have provided me with insights into the right mix of herbs to synergistically remove body pollution common to your environments. With this information I have formulated BOTANICAL SPA THERAPY HERBAL BATH TEAS recipe; which use the body’s largest organ the skin, to promote detoxification through binding of harmful, foreign toxics. The bath tea approach can be more effective than taking internal supplements and cleanses. If the body’s detoxification systems, including the liver are compromised, the herbal bath tea method is the better choice.   Make your own herbal bath tea bags using the recipe in my book. Learn more about detoxification by visiting my webpage www.mybodycanhealitself.ca/detox.htm.

COLOUR: A self-help therapy

“Of all God’s gifts to the sighted man, colour is the holiest, the most divine, the most solemn”.

John Ruskin, English author, poet and artist

color wheel

Do you associate different colours found in your home, wardrobe and environments with the feelings you experience? Do you feel happier when you see or wear certain colours? Are your drawn to specific colours? Is your favourite colour a reflection of what your body could use some help with. Emotions and moods can be affected by the use of colour. Each colour’s vibration is associated with different attributes and qualities. Colour therapy is the use of colour to assist the body in healing.

  • Blue has a relaxing calming effect and is used therapeutically in dyslexia.
  • Magenta is used therapeutically to normalize blood pressure.
  • Violet is used therapeutically as an immune enhancer.
  • Yellow is used therapeutically for night blindness because it filters out blue light.
Colour can be combined with light therapy to enhance the healing benefits.

Adding colour to your home, work and wardrobe can promote well-being. Consider the health attributes of colour choices as additional criteria, when selecting paint and clothing. Learn more about the individual therapeutic benefits of colour in THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION where I tell you more, including which colours depress appetite.

HAIR DYE CONTAINS HARMFUL CHEMICALS: Are you affected?

“Knock ‘em dead gorgeous”

hair

Are your symptoms or health condition due to or further compromised by the harmful chemicals in your hair dye?  This is a question that nobody wants to ask or think about. It is a question that you should ask and think about; especially if you are already experiencing unwanted/chronic symptoms or have compromised health. What is the cost of beauty?

What’s so harmful in hair dye?

  • Ammonia (a neurotoxin) and peroxide (leads to neurotoxicity)
  • Petrochemical p-phenylenediamine (PPD), and its derivatives, 4-MMPD and 4-MMPD Sulphate
  • Diaminobenzene, ammoniated mercury, and sodium laurel sulfate.
  • Mercury (a neurotoxin)

What do the harmful substances do?

  • PPDs are mutagenic which means they can alter DNA codes, a precursor to cancers.
  • Contribute to compromised organ function.
  • Implicated in serious health disorders.
  • Mercury, ammonia and peroxide are neurotoxic, which means it has the ability to cross the blood-brain protective barrier and causes direct/indirect damage to the cells in the brain and nervous system. Neurotoxins  mess with brain chemistry and normal brain function.

Research shows hair dye is implicated in specific cancers:

Studies shows a connection to the following cancers with long term hair dying

  • Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
  • Bladder Cancer
  • Leukemia and Multiple Myeloma
  • Ovarian Cancer
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis

Are there healthier options?

I have to admit that I coloured my hair for many years. I always liked the way I looked.

When my immune and nervous system crashed many years ago I did a lot of research in my quest for answers and recovery. The information on toxic chemicals and body pollution led me to the decision to stop dying my hair. I wear my hair long and it has multiple shades of mostly grey and brown. I have people stop me in stores and ask me if I dye my hair. At first I was quite taken aback. They then tell me that my hair is beautiful. Not something I thought anyone would ever say about grey hair.

Since that time I have been asked by clients if there are safer hair dyes. These are the options I tell them are available with the claims the manufacturer makes. Make sure you check the ingredients initially and often. Raw material sources, ingredient lists and manufacturing process can change, altering the safety of the product.
