Fall brings cooler temperatures yet maybe not cool enough to turn your furnace on. One of the challenges during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall is to maintain good indoor air quality. While a furnace is functioning there is usually a fresh air intake from the outside. During the shoulder seasons and for some all year, while you are using other forms of heating such as fireplaces, wood stoves, electric heaters (baseboards) or water boiler heating – your home is not receiving daily infusions of fresh air. The resulting accumulation of poor indoor air from painting, paint stripping, heating with kerosene heaters, cooking, daily activities or engaging in maintenance and hobby activities; can come with serious health challenges including compromised brain and nervous system function. To maintain optimum health it is important to lower the concentrations of indoor air pollutants in your home and to increase the amount of outdoor air coming indoors. So open your windows often, especially during shoulder seasons to clean your air and all year if your do not have a heating system with fresh indoor air intake. Run your furnace fan on auto to circulate the fresh air that you take in. Make sure your furnace has an external fresh air intake. HEAVY METALS: Dangerous To Your Brain

Heavy metals are a serious concern and found to be responsible for many environmentally related illnesses.

I work with many clients who have various health challenges including compromised brain function and memory. For each person that presents with compromised health I recommend various detoxification and healing strategies.  There are many natural substances that can bind with harmful toxic and foreign materials found in the brain and body. MEMORY: Where, Oh Where, Have You Gone?

The cartoon that I have selected above for this post has a double meaning.  Your brain/mind is like the operating system of your computer.  We all know how messed up our computers can get at times. We’ll, our brains/minds can also get messed up by a number of interfering/damaging factors – resulting in compromised brain computer memory.

I know that memory loss is no laughing matter.  My mother is having serious memory challenges – dementia – in her late 80’s. Our hope as a family is that it never gets to the point where our mother doesn’t know us.  A recent fall where my mother broke 6 ribs, combined with her having no recall of the incident and prescribed limitations imposed due to the injury – has presented additional care challenges.

Memory loss is a sad reality that many people have to face as they watch their parents age. Many people even younger are experiencing memory issues. So what is going wrong? Do people who live in the ‘blue zones‘ of the world experience the same degree of compromised memory?

Memory involves three processes: encoding, storage and retrieval.  These processes are carried out by various parts of the brain. Obviously something is going ‘wrong’ in the brain – resulting in compromised memory.

YOUR DRINKING WATER: A possible connection to Alzheimers, Dementia and your physical symptoms.

Water is so important to our health and yet we often times pay little attention to it when our health fails. Getting enough water every day is vital; but getting the right kind of water is even more critical to health

What kind of water should we be drinking? Look to nature for that information. The best source of water to maintain a healthy body is water in its natural form minus any contaminants. Drinking water that has had the naturally occurring minerals removed (e.g. reverse osmosis) may leave us with unwanted toxicities. The minerals bind to harmful substances and remove them from the body.

Aluminum toxicity can occur in persons who drink water that is missing these vital components, which are required to bind to aluminum and remove it from the body. Aluminum toxicity has been a suspected health concern,  especially in mental conditions like Alzheimers and dementia.

When investigating your mental health concerns make sure you take a close look at the water you are drinking and bathing in on a daily basis. Your skin is your largest organ so make sure your filtration methods address shower and bath water as well as drinking water.

When investigating your physical health concerns it is also important to look at the drinking water.  Your body requires a daily ongoing intake of water with naturally occurring minerals to bind with toxins and remove them from your body. Many health conditions can result from a body that is not regularly naturally detoxified by healthy drinking water.

Some water filtration methods use harmful chemicals in the purification process. The natural occurring minerals in the water will help bind to the harmful chemicals and remove them.

Research reports stress that long term consumption of de-mineralized water can in fact be dangerous. Dr. Zolton Rona‚ author of The Joy of Health‚ states that “the longer one consumes distilled water‚ the more likely the development of mineral deficiencies and an acid state.” Dr. Paavo Airola‚ cancer expert and author of “How to Get Well” and “Cancer… Causes‚ Prevention and Healing” also reports that “long term consumption of distilled water eventually results in multiple mineral deficiencies.”

Drinking water that has been softened with salt also brings with it health concerns:

  • Drinking softened water will increase sodium levels (most diets are already higher than normal), risk higher lead exposure and can cause physical dehydration.
  • Softened water has been stripped of trace minerals that are essential to the proper functioning of the human body. Calcium and magnesium are needed by the body. Diets high in these minerals (most diets are not) will not compensate for the absence of these necessary minerals in drinking water.
  • The absence of calcium and magnesium (due to softened water) causes imbalance in the body’s homeostasis, can lead to increased urination, a decrease in red blood cells and risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Increased risk of high blood pressure.
  • Increased risk of fluid retention.
