Fall brings cooler temperatures yet maybe not cool enough to turn your furnace on. One of the challenges during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall is to maintain good indoor air quality. While a furnace is functioning there is usually a fresh air intake from the outside. During the shoulder seasons and for some all year, while you are using other forms of heating such as fireplaces, wood stoves, electric heaters (baseboards) or water boiler heating – your home is not receiving daily infusions of fresh air. The resulting accumulation of poor indoor air from painting, paint stripping, heating with kerosene heaters, cooking, daily activities or engaging in maintenance and hobby activities; can come with serious health challenges including compromised brain and nervous system function. To maintain optimum health it is important to lower the concentrations of indoor air pollutants in your home and to increase the amount of outdoor air coming indoors. So open your windows often, especially during shoulder seasons to clean your air and all year if your do not have a heating system with fresh indoor air intake. Run your furnace fan on auto to circulate the fresh air that you take in. Make sure your furnace has an external fresh air intake. Heavy metals are a serious concern and found to be responsible for many environmentally related illnesses.

I work with many clients who have various health challenges including compromised brain function and memory. YOUR BODY CAN HEAL ITSELF: Follow My Road Map to Get There

Sometimes I forget how ill I really was. A blessing for sure!

I am revisiting my multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), toxicant induced loss of tolerance (TILT), environmental illness (EI), chronic fatigue (CF), multiple food allergies, irritable bowel, depression, seasonal affected disorder (SAD), stress sensitization and spasmodic dysphonia diagnoses today.  I am often reminded about how severely ill and affected I was by these conditions when I get inquires from all over the world asking for help from those still suffering.

All of the preceding diagnoses (plus more) were given to me in the past. I suffered severely for many years and I now have good health and feel good. I can eat all foods and feel save in many environments, avoiding toxic environments as everyone should.

On my journey to good health I tried many strategies, always looking for ‘the cure’.  Like many people I read every article about the latest supplement and cures and spent a lot of money on trying them.  From today’s view point it is clear to see that one cannot regain their health by merely supplementing/adding on something; one must start at the very beginning. Regaining health requires implementation of a series of  ‘stop, start and change’ strategies. The biggest challenge, in ‘hind sight’ and from the successes of my clients has been knowing ‘what do you stop, start and change‘. That’s were my road map can help you.

AN OUT OF BALANCE NERVOUS SYSTEM: The Possible Root of Your Symptoms

As a practitioner I see many clients presenting with many health concerns and symptoms. Over the years it has become more apparent that the root of their health challenges is often due to stress overloading the nervous system, often leading to an  imbalance between the brain and the two systems in the body. The sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, parts of the autonomic nervous system, work together to maintain balance in the body allowing your organs and systems to work properly. When the balance between the brain and the two systems is lost, symptoms occur.

There are many factors that can knock your life and ultimately your brain, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system out of balance.

This type of imbalance usually comes with chronic stress and anxiety and a flow of stress hormones; that like acid, chews at your organs, endocrines, body parts, blood brain barrier and systems; and leaves the body pH acidic with accompanying symptoms.

DEPRESSION FREE: Tips to Get You There

You have probably already tried many strategies in your battle to eliminate depression. I suffered major bouts of depression in the past as well as melancholy. I was told by doctors that I would have to be on medications for the rest of my life. It took me a lot of years of research and trial and error approaches to achieve 100% depression free status, to where I feel upbeat and happy. The strategies that finally worked to lift my ‘depression blind’ permanently, were not the traditional approach. I did try the medically prescribed treatments in my journey to become depression free – they did not work for me and made me feel like not wanting to live. I am not advocating that you stop your medications.  There are many strategies that you can combine with medications.

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG

Although every person’s journey through depression is unique, each depression equation shares common denominators. Your depression equation’s road blocks, pitfalls and unanswered questions share many of the same ‘common’ denominators’ as another person’s. A common denominator is a commonly shared theme or trait; also a common element in a mathematical equation. In math class you learn to rewrite your math equations to change the answer. You can rewrite your depression equation by subtracting out or cancelling the well-being challenging contributing factors; and adding in powerful strategies to promote healing and restore normal brain chemistry to eliminate your depression.

Here are some quick tips to get you started:

  • Understand your body’s potentially harmful chemical equation and factors that may interfere with your brain chemistry.  Where can you learn more?

  • Diffuse essential oils to improve mood. The diffuser would be an excellent add on at home, school and the office to dissipate stress and improve productivity and mood.

Before you proceed to implement any of the above strategies – talk to your regular healthcare provider.  Transitioning from depression and anxiety to 100% depression free using these strategies requires time and the supervision of an open minded, informed practitioner. DO NOT STOP TAKING YOUR PRESCRIBED MEDICATION. These strategies do help to promote depression free living. I have been able to duplicate the same 100% depression free status with my clients using these and additional holistic strategies.

You come equipped with a quotient of emotions and values necessary to your well-being. Where does your happy gauge sit? Twenty five percent happy most of the time or seventy five percent happy some of the time. Maybe your happy gauge swings back and forth between the two. As you observe in your day-to-day living, people differ in their levels of happiness.  This is true for other emotions and values. You may know some people who seem to be ‘super happy’ all the time.

It is a scientific fact that people who are happy live longer and are healthier. How can you enhance your happiness? Scientists have been studying people who live the longest throughout the world and documenting their levels of well-being. TOPPING UP YOUR HAPPY LEVELS

It’s not necessary to travel the world to find ways to change your happiness level, your ability to be positive and ‘rock and roll’ with life’s challenges. Countless programs and tools are available to enhance the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to recognize and manage your emotions, be more caring and positive in relationships, make responsible decisions, and handle challenging situations constructively. Social and emotional learning programs are often part of workplace training, improving work relationships and productivity. Healthy emotional intelligence is a key primary ingredient in rejuvenation.

Is Your Blood Brain Barrier Intact? Could It Be A Factor In Your Mental Health?

Mental illness is a scary condition. I have personally ‘been there’ several times.  One in 4 people will be affected by some kind of mental condition this year and 1 in 5 people will suffer from depression and anxiety. Those statistics are extremely concerning, mostly because these conditions can precipitate suicide.  My heart goes out to all persons who are affected by mental conditions, directly or indirectly.  Since I am now 100% free of depression; I feel compelled to share what I have learned – so that you can reap the same symptom free status. A healthy, properly functioning blood brain barrier is crucial to mental health. Understanding your blood brain barrier (BBB) is one of  the first steps to restore your mental health.

The blood brain barrier is made up of a layer of cells, including endothelial cells, that fit together tightly so that harmful and unwanted substances cannot pass out of the bloodstream. Some substances, like glucose, are allowed to pass through.

A healthy blood brain barrier:

  • protects the brain from ‘foreign and harmful substances’ in the blood, as well as hormones and neurotransmitters. These substances can alter brain and body chemistry. What is your brain/body’s chemical equation made up of?
  • prevents large molecule substances from passing through to the brain
  • prevents low lipid (fat) soluble molecules from penetrating into the brain (some drugs rapidly cross through into the brain)
  • slows down highly charged electrical molecules

Identifying Factors That Damage or Compromise Your Blood Brain Barrier

There are many factors with the potential to compromise your blood brain barrier – altering your brain/body chemistry and normal brain function.

  • high blood pressure opens/compromises the BBB.
  • developmental challenges (pollution/distress in utero and birth) compromise the BBB
  • microwaves open/compromise the BBB
  • high concentrations of substances (e.g. alcohol, drugs, chemicals) in the blood can open/compromise the BBB
  • brain/body pollution can open/compromise the BBB
  • environmental toxins (e.g. neurotoxins – found in fragrances, air fresheners, laundry, personal care and cleaning products, air pollution) can open/compromise the BBB
  • radiation opens/compromises the BBB
  • infection and viruses open/compromise the BBB
  • inflammation opens/compromises the BBB
  • restricted blood flow compromises the BBB
  • trauma compromises the BBB
  • chronic stress hormone production compromises the BBB

Protecting and Repairing Your Blood Brain Barrier

Now that you understand the importance of a healthy blood brain barrier to mental health, you will be better equipped to start implementing strategies that can cure your condition.
