MENTAL HEALTH by DESIGN: How to Edit Your Mental Health Equation for Improved Mental Health

mentalhealthequation

Every person’s depression equation, including yours, is uniquely different and yet every person’s depression equation shares common denominators.

A common denominator is a commonly shared theme or trait.  You will no doubt have heard people speak about the common denominators for success in business, relationships and people who live to be healthy past 100.  A common denominator is also a common element in a mathematical equation. In math class you learn to rewrite your math equations to change the undesirable answer. When things are not adding up in your life you may be prompted to start subtracting out potential causes; analyzing and rewriting your mental health equation by subtracting out contributing factors and adding in supports, can help you to restore and maintain better mental as well as physical health.

In the midst of the additional uncertainties and stressors added to our lives and the lives of the people around us due to the Covid-19 pandemic, adding in supports would be a good place to start to restore and maintain better mental health.  There are many free mental health supports available, depending on where you live. I have listed several supports at the end of this post. Subtracting out some of the mental health challenging factors, like those I highlight below, may have to wait until a later time after isolation, when your regular healthcare provider and other qualified practitioners can guide you. You now have the time to do your research and planning, make diet changes, add in exercise and mind body strategies.

How do you rewrite your mental health equation?

You can rewrite your mental health equation by subtracting out or cancelling your well-being challenging contributing factors and adding in strategies to help eliminate your depression and other mental challenges. The combined approach strives to ‘right the wrongs’ that may be a part of your depression/mental health equation; allowing your body’s natural healing mechanisms to heal your brain and restore your brain chemistry and function to normal. It took me years of research and trial and error strategies, while also working on my multiple physical health equations to achieve the improved health results I have. This post focuses on the mental health equations that I and my clients have addressed to achieve improved mental health.  Obviously brain damage and past trauma are additional factors that will need to be addressed with additional medical and psychological supports. This is a process that will take time. It is not as simple as the equation image below.

I suffered from depression at various times in my life.  My understanding and definition of what was possible about being depression free were limited due to everything I was told and read. My father had suffered from depression and I was told once I had two episodes of depression in my life I would probably need to be on medication for the rest of my life for it. I changed my definition of what I believed was possible, I am a bit of a rebel, and then looked for ways to make it happen. I analyzed my depression equation, started researching and then started editing my depression equation, subtracting out potential causes and adding in supports. I am now 100% depression free and have been for many years. I do not take medication or regular supplements for depression. Not only that, I feel upbeat and happy and blessed!

You may need to rewrite your definition of what is possible in terms of becoming depression free so that your brain and body are on the same page. This may require a paradigm shift. Every person may not be able to stop taking medications, but you may be able to reduce your medications and improve your mental health by editing your mental health equation. Do not stop taking your prescribed medications or start editing your depression equation without the supervision of your regular healthcare provider.

“According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway. Because bees don’t care what humans think is impossible.”[1]

Understanding the Genetics and Environmental Factors of Your Depression Equation

Although you may have a family history of depression or mental illness, it does not mean that you will have or continue to suffer mentally.  Genetic predispositions are inherited but do not always become expressed, allowing for a condition, unless they are turned on by environmental factors. Although you cannot subtract out genetic factors, you can prevent genetic predispositions from activating due to environmental influences, preventing the related health challenge.

Environmental factors or external factors, like your lifestyle, including work and life balance, diet, exercise, pollution and physical, mental, emotional and spiritual stressors can affect your brain chemistry and brain function, mood, resilience, ability to cope and stay positive. You have control over most of these factors and for those out of your control, there are supports that you can add in to cancel out or minimize their negative impact.

Your general health, nurture, supports, medications and habits can affect your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. This is an area where you may have to make some hard and radical decisions, which should only be considered and implemented under the care of qualified health practitioners.

“After completing an enormous study, scientists have dismissed claims that single gene variants, or even a small group of them, can dictate susceptibility to depression. Instead, they suggest that any genetic risk for depression likely arises from very large numbers of variants, each contributing a small effect.”

“In an American Journal of Psychiatry paper, the team concludes that early theories about ‘depression candidate genes’ are wrong and that studies identifying them have likely done no more than produce ‘false positives’.”[2]

“A genetic predisposition (sometimes also called genetic susceptibility) is an increased likelihood of developing a particular disease based on a person’s genetic makeup. A genetic predisposition results from specific genetic variations that are often inherited from a parent. These genetic changes contribute to the development of a disease but do not directly cause it. Some people with a predisposing genetic variation will never get the disease while others will, even within the same family.”[3]

“However, it appears that even with a genetic predisposition to mental illness during birth, resistance to mental illness is possible. Resilience is heightened because of a favorable nurturing environment after birth or perhaps due to exercise. People should create enriched environments where they help and support each other, exercise actively, and gain resistance to stress.”[4]

Environmental pollutants can become a part of your body pollution and mental health equation. As a teenager I pumped leaded gasoline at my father’s gas station.  I started to suffer from depression at that time.  While investigating my depression equation later in life, when I once again suffered from depression after off gassing of a new house, I made the environmental pollution connection and implemented whole body detoxification, a two step detox; through natural strategies to deal with my accumulated body pollution.  Do you know what your body pollution looks like? Read my blog post on body pollution to find out.  A combination of whole body detoxification and BodyFeedback Interview and Therapy treatment for a client, eliminated a disabling 50+ year caterpillar phobia. Keeping your blood brain barrier healthy is important to prevent pollutants into your brain.  Read more at my blog post: NATURAL CURES: Protecting and Repairing Your Blood Brain Barrier to Restore Mental Health

“A cocktail of harmful toxic chemicals has been detected in every person tested in a cross Canada study of pollution in people.”[5]

“In this sample of young adults with low levels of lead exposure, higher blood lead was associated with increased odds of major depression and panic disorder. Exposure to lead at levels generally considered safe could result in adverse mental health outcomes.”[6]

“Lead exposure in childhood appears to have long-lasting negative effects on mental health and personality in adulthood, according to a study of people who grew up in the era of leaded gasoline. The findings reveal that the higher a person’s blood lead levels at age 11, the more likely they are to show signs of mental illness and difficult personality traits by age 38.”[7]

“Vert and colleagues in Barcelona identified significantly increasing rates of depression among those exposed to a range of air pollutants, with doubling odds of depression”

“Emergency department attendance for depressive episodes were significantly higher for particular combinations of air pollutants at certain times”[8]

What we eat effects not only our physical, but also mental health. Although you may not have been advised to look at your diet when presenting at your doctor’s office with symptoms of depression, research has shown that diet is a key factor in brain health.  Although I was eating a fairly healthy diet during my periods of depression, study through a Nutritional Consulting course provided me with an in depth knowledge of nutrition, detoxification pathways and health recovery.

“Few people are aware of the connection between nutrition and depression while they easily understand the connection between nutritional deficiencies and physical illness. Depression is more typically thought of as strictly biochemical-based or emotionally-rooted. On the contrary, nutrition can play a key role in the onset as well as severity and duration of depression. Many of the easily noticeable food patterns that precede depression are the same as those that occur during depression. These may include poor appetite, skipping meals, and a dominant desire for sweet foods. Nutritional neuroscience is an emerging discipline shedding light on the fact that nutritional factors are intertwined with human cognition, behavior, and emotions.”[9]

“Studies have compared ‘traditional’ diets, like the Mediterranean diet and the traditional Japanese diet, to a typical ‘Western’ diet and have shown that the risk of depression is 25% to 35% lower in those who eat a traditional diet. Scientists account for this difference because these traditional diets tend to be high in vegetables, fruits, unprocessed grains, and fish and seafood, and to contain only modest amounts of lean meats and dairy. They are also void of processed and refined foods and sugars, which are staples of the ‘Western’ dietary pattern. In addition, many of these unprocessed foods are fermented, and therefore act as natural probiotics.”[10]

Dr. Emily Deans, in her Psychology Today article, reports that randomized controlled trials show that the right diet can improve depression.[11]

Stress, stress idling and stress sensitization can be contributing factors to depression and chronic anxiety, factors in your mental health equation. Implementing ongoing stress management strategies throughout your life are important to living depression free and enjoying  good, consistent mental health. Hopefully this will be the first go to, as well as diet changes and exercise that doctors prescribe to people presenting with anxiety and depression symptoms, not just a suggestion or after thought. You can read more in my blog post on stress title STRESS IDLING & SENSITIVITY: A Modern Day Health Challenge.

“If the stress is continued or prolonged, it can leave adverse effects on body’s immune, cardiovascular, neuroendocrine and central nervous systems. When chronic stress goes untreated it can result into serious disabilities like insomnia, weakened immune system, high blood pressure, anxiety and muscle pain. It can also play a role in developing major disorders like depression, heart disease and obesity.”[12]

The human body was created with many amazing abilities, often referred to as ‘the doctor within’. Understanding and utilizing those often misunderstood and mostly forgotten powers is crucial to well-being and eliminating depression. Exploring ways to continually develop and maintain strength of mind and body will enable you to better endure the demands of life with grace and confidence; ultimately allowing you to stay focused on the pursuit of meaningful goals. Change and fortitude often start with a healthy dose of fear. Sometimes fear comes through a ‘wake up call, something is really wrong’, like the debilitating symptoms of depression.

“Mind-body interventions (MBIs) such as meditation, yoga and Tai Chi don’t simply relax us; they can ‘reverse’ the molecular reactions in our DNA which cause ill-health and depression, according to a study by the universities of Coventry and Radboud.”[13]

You can find the summarized strategies that I used to edit my physical and mental health equations to improve my health eliminating depression, toxicant induced loss of tolerance (TILT), multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) and multiple food allergies in my book The Whole Person Well-being Equation. You can find out about the additional supports that I use through my blog posts and social media pages which are listed at the end of this post.

These are very difficult times and existing mental health and addiction challenges can be magnified. If you have people in your life who are exhibiting threatening mental health behaviours towards themselves or others, it is important to take action through setting boundaries and incident reporting.  Failure to take note and action could result in serious consequences for other people, including your loved ones. The recent events in Nova Scotia highlights the seriousness of radical changes in a person’s mental state that led to the death of many innocent people. Utilize and recommend the mental health supports that are readily available during the pandemic through governments and community services. Check out the resource list below.

SPASMODIC DYSPHONIA and Voice Disorders: Managing Voice Disorders Naturally

speak

I receive many email inquiries from all over the world about spasmodic dysphonia. They are always a reminder of how bad my vocal spasms were in the past. Not a time I ever want to revisit. Spasmodic dysphonia and voice disorders are no laughing matter!

According to the medical system, spasmodic dysphonia is a neurological disorder affecting the voice muscles in the larynx, or voice box. In spasmodic dysphonia, the muscles inside the vocal folds experience sudden involuntary movements—called spasms—which interfere with the ability of the folds to vibrate and produce sound.  Spasmodic dysphonia causes voice breaks and can give the voice a tight, strained quality. There were times in the past when I felt like there was a tight grasp around my neck preventing my speech.

Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder caused by a neurological injury or disease and it can affect one or more of the speech subsystems – respiration, phonation, resonance, prosody, articulation. Injury or disease to the speech musculature may also cause dysarthric like symptoms. When the part of the brain that controls speech production is damaged, the link from the brain to the muscles of speech is affected.

Damage, malfunction and interference from various sources (body pollution, drugs, stress hormones, etc.) in the areas of the brain and body responsible for speech and vocalization can all trigger vocal spasms and other voice dysfunction. Some people lose their sense of smell or develop a heightened sense of smell due to body pollution and it’s impact on the senses. Neurotoxins found in foods, water, air and personal care products (e.g. fragrances), household (laundry, fabric softeners, air fresheners), industrial and lawn and garden products can cause triggering of vocal spasms. Toxins and other factors can damage or remove the protective myelin from areas of the nervous system making it more vulnerable to stress and other factors leading to triggering. How do you repair damaged myelin? There are many emerging possibilities. I share what I used in my protocol available below.
brocawernickesareas

Broca’s and Wernicke’s area’s of the brain are also involved in speech.   http://thebrain.mcgill.ca/flash/a/a_10/a_10_cr/a_10_cr_lan/a_10_cr_lan.html

I was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia in 2001 and again in 2012 after laryngoscopic investigation. Both times I was offered botox injectons as treatment.  Both times I turned down the offer.  Botox is a drug made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It’s the same toxin that causes a life-threatening type of food poisoning. After spending years recovering from environmental illness issues caused by environmental toxins, referred to as toxicant induced loss of tolerance (TILT), I was not about to allow any dangerous substances to be injected into my body. Besides that, there was no guarantee the treatment would work, and I was told I would loose my voice for about a week  each time and would have to repeat the treatment about every 3 to 4 months.

As a holistic wellness practitioner I had researched and tried many strategies in my quest to restore my health and repair my voice. I gained improvement from these strategies, but when I went through a period of extreme stress during my husband’s cancer struggle and subsequent death – my voice again became very strangled.

In September of 2012, I completed one series of non-surgical voice repair lessons for spasmodic dysphonia which gave some improvement, but this required me to do a rigorous exercise regime daily.  I had a lot more work to do to eliminate the spasms.

During times of stress, nervousness and fatigue – especially on the phone – my voice continued to break up and spasm at times. Chemical stressors, environmental and contributing emotional stressors were the original cause of my vocal challenges (TILT).

I developed a holistic protocol of the steps that I used that brought me improvements.  I added customized visualizations to ‘right’ the wrongs that may be present in spasmodic dysphonia. You need to understand the power of visualization to understand how these can help you.  You can find that science based information here.   I have developed correcting energy treatments that I use regularly. The five correcting body scan visualizations designed to correct what may be underlying in cases of spasmodic dysphonia and voice disorders, can be found in The Whole Person Well-being Equation and in the Working with SD and Voice Diagnoses e-book below.

Ebook Cover New_1-1

I continue to use stress management strategies ongoing to maintain balance, crucial to averting spasms and triggering. Managing triggers was an ongoing challenge as I noticed environmental factors as well as anxiety could trigger spasms.  Although anxiety is not the cause of spasmodic dysphonia it can trigger spasms. Electromagnetic energy from phones seemed to be real triggers for me for a long time.  I used various strategies to stop my body from triggering.  You can read about some of these in my blog post UPDATING OUTDATED BODY SOFTWARE: For Symptom Free Livinghttp://mybodycanhealitself.ca/wordpress/?p=1773.

In the summer  of 2014 I started to use 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils in an attempt to resolve the remaining vulnerabilities of my voice and associated anticipatory anxiety. The pure essential oils are third party certified, the only ones I would use therapeutically. I applied an essential oil blend to my sternum area, diaphragm, vocal cord reflexology points on my hands and feet and throat at bedtime and in the morning.  I also did this before I knew that I am going to speak at an event. I diffused an essential oil blend into the air at night and at times during the day. I noticed a great improvement in the consistency of my voice and calming effect after using the essential oils. Anticipatory anxiety can become a contributing factor to triggering spasms.

I have come a long way using a variety of strategies in my journey to restore my voice. It has been a long struggle and I expect nothing less than complete voice recovery, voice consistency and dependability. If you expect the same results that I have achieved – start with my holistic protocol in my book.

My message to you – don’t give up – don’t let a diagnosis or prognosis (‘there is no cure’) cause you to lose hope or waiver in your quest for symptom relief and recovery. More is always possible and possible is ‘doable’ by you! Consider using a protocol that will give your improvement in increments instead of claims of ‘cure all’ approaches that abound.

Expect more! Do not settle! You may need to implement a series of paradigm shifts.

IMPORTANT UPDATE – February 11, 2015:

Although anxiety and nervousness are not the cause of spasmodic dysphonia, both can trigger vocal spasms. This is one of the challenges that those with the condition and other voice disorders deal with on a daily basis. Public speaking is often an overwhelming challenge as a result.

As a holistic wellness  practitioner I work one on one with clients.  I have often been asked to do talks about health related topics.  Sometimes I have accepted these invites and in recent years speaking at these events had always resulted in my body mounting skewed vocal responses and spasms, and feeling embarrassed. I now know that anticipatory anxiety was one of my triggers.

I made a decision a long time ago that I was going to get my body to cure my spasmodic dysphonia, just as I got it to cure my depression, multiple food allergies and multiple chemical sensitivities. That was despite the fact that I was told that there was no cure for any of my diagnosed conditions, including spasmodic dysphonia.

Yesterday I taught a scheduled workshop that I was determined to do to a group of women interested in natural beauty. The event was to be held at the home of a client. When I woke up yesterday morning I felt nervous about my decision and the upcoming workshop.  I decided to use a custom blend of essential oil on my sternum/mid chest area (the place in my body where I feel my anxiety and nervousness rise). I applied it every 15 minutes throughout the morning.  Although I felt slightly calmer, my chest was reacting with nervousness, resulting in uneasy vocal comfort. I had great apprehension about teaching the workshop, fearing my voice would go into spasms.

I was on route to the workshop location and stopped to see my mother at the nursing home. She was experiencing a headache and asked me about relief.  I would usually pull a bottle of peppermint oil out of my purse for headaches but could not find it.  I had another oil that is the second choice so I pulled it out and applied it to my mom’s neck on the side where she was experiencing her headache.  As I applied the oil with my fingers I felt the nervousness in my chest subside.

I left the nursing home and reapplied the oils.  Within 15 minutes the feeling of nervousness and anxiety melted completely from my chest. When I arrived at the workshop site I spent two hours setting up and getting organized, feeling quite in control and calm – no apprehension. I reapplied the oils to my chest area before workshop participants arrived. I felt no nervousness or anxiety welcoming participants. I felt no apprehension.

After being introduced I started my presentation – WITHOUT EXCESS ANXIETY, APPREHENSION OR NERVOUSNESS – AND ABSOLUTELY NO UNCONTROLLABLE SPASMS.  Throughout the 4 1/2 hours of presentation and question and answers, I had absolutely no vocal cord spasms. This had been my ultimate goal for so long – to be able to speak publicly comfortably without uncontrollable vocal spasms. Although this may not seem like a big deal; for a person diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia or a voice disorder, public speaking can be a huge challenge. This had been a ongoing challenge for me for years. Last night I mastered that challenge by reaping the amazing effects of therapeutic essential oils in combination with my holistic spasmodic dysphonia protocol. And yes, there are still days that I may experience some vocal challenges – the good news is that it is seldom now and I can usually manage those challenges equipped with a supply of natural strategies.  I only use the essential oils for spasms when needed now. The body has an amazing ability to heal – with the right direction and supports. The main focus of oil usage now is to deal with any anticipatory anxiety, which I am sure those who have suffered from the condition can relate to.

If you suffer from spasmodic dysphonia or other vocal disorders and the nervousness and anxiety that accompany those conditions, consider adding 100% pure essential oils in your quest to become symptom free and master your public speaking goals.

The essential oils alone are not ‘a cure all’.

The oils will help with symptoms but you must deal with the underlying contributing factors to your condition at the same time if you expect to achieve the same results that I have acheived.

If you want to get started on your recovery, start where I did, with the detailed steps in my holistic protocol.  You can find the link to my book at http://www.mybodycanhealitself.ca/what_people_are_saying.htmEbook Cover New_1-1

Whatever your collection of symptoms or health condition, there are many options to get you to 100% symptom free status.  Well-being is a journey not merely a destination. Although you are a unique individual, your symptom/condition equation will have some of the same common denominators as that of another person. What does your symptom/condition equation and body’s chemical equation look like? Rewriting your well-being challenging equations by cancelling out the contributing common denominators will bring you closer to your desired well-being goal. It is a good place to start on your journey to improved health.

How long would it take for those same toxins and toxins in your personal care products  to reach the brain or other body parts? Possibly becoming a part of your health condition equation (anxiety, depression, memory, confusion, other symptoms and conditions)?

After using products with toxic or harmful ingredients our bodies can reach a toxic threshold.  Depending on the number of toxic ingredients we are exposed to on a daily basis, our total toxic load, our body’s detoxification ability; we can become sick. Symptoms may not appear until many months or years later. Some people sooner than others and some more seriously if the ingredients are considered partial carcinogens. The Halifax Project research in this area is “focused on the possibility that complex mixtures of commonly encountered chemicals in the environment may be capable of carcinogenic effects that have yet to be fully appreciated”.

What are your personal health costs of beauty? Many personal care products contain harmful ingredients.  Many of the ingredients in the personal care products you use are potentially harmful. There is a high degree of nondisclosure about what goes into personal care products.  The FDA does not require companies to test their products for safety before marketing. How many of unsafe products did you use today? Are the unsafe ingredients that you have consumed now a part of your body’s pollution and well-being equation? Are the products you used today causing you harm and possibly responsible for your symptoms or condition?

Always be vigilant about investigating the ingredients for the products you use. Consider changing your beauty regime to eliminate your health costs of beauty?Ingredients sources and processing can change potentially compromising the products safety. Just as a pain patch delivers its dose throughout the body, harmful chemicals used on the skin can enter and can be dispersed throughout your body becoming a part of your body’s chemical equation; causing interference and dysfunction. Many of the ingredients in personal care products contain carcinogens (or partial carcinogens), endocrine disruptors and neurotoxins; ultimately becoming part of your body’s chemical equation and symptom picture.

Eliminate the Health cost of beauty for a healthier you!

My daughter Noël Ray is a Certified Makeup Artist who shares her healthy beauty tips:

” I am a certified Makeup Artist,Certified Hair Stylist and Certified Nutritional Consultant. I completed my certification for makeup and hair at the Blanche MacDonald Center in Vancouver BC. My Nutritional Consulting certification is through the Packard School of Nutrition. After a few years in the industry doing weddings, photo shoots, special events and retail at MAC makeup;  I became more and more aware of the chemicals and toxins in the products I was using every day! I decided it was time to make a change! I no longer wanted to support these companies who were pushing their toxic products on society, with false claims about how great they were…..performance wise maybe yes, but health wise it was a complete lie! I wanted my clients and the people I love to be aware of the cancer causing chemicals in the cosmetics that they were putting on their skin – the body’s LARGEST ORGAN; not to mention on their mouths and around their eyes! I slowly switched all of my cosmetics over to safer and cleaner options and started working with organic and natural makeup on a regular basis. Ingredients used in personal care products and their sources can change.”

Buyer beware and informed!

As you all know, sometimes the “organic” and “natural” product choices aren’t always the best performers! You can read some of  Noël’s beauty product reviews on her Hippy Princess Blog at http://thisismylifethesearemypassions.wordpress.com/

NATURAL CURES: Protecting and Repairing Your Blood Brain Barrier to Restore Mental Health

WHAT-COULD-POSSIBLY-GO-WRONG

Is Your Blood Brain Barrier Intact? Could It Be A Factor In Your Mental Health?

Mental illness is a scary condition. I have personally ‘been there’ several times.  One in 4 people will be affected by some kind of mental condition this year and 1 in 5 people will suffer from depression and anxiety. Those statistics are extremely concerning, mostly because these conditions can precipitate suicide.  My heart goes out to all persons who are affected by mental conditions, directly or indirectly.  Since I am now 100% free of depression; I feel compelled to share what I have learned – so that you can reap the same symptom free status. I work with clients with various health challenges including depression using my holistic protocol to help them eliminate their symptoms.

A healthy, properly functioning blood brain barrier is crucial to mental health. Understanding your blood brain barrier (BBB) is one of  the first steps to restore your mental health.

The blood brain barrier is made up of a layer of cells, including endothelial cells, that fit together tightly so that harmful and unwanted substances cannot pass out of the bloodstream. Some substances, like glucose, are allowed to pass through.

A healthy blood brain barrier:

  • protects the brain from ‘foreign and harmful substances’ in the blood, as well as hormones and neurotransmitters. These substances can alter brain and body chemistry. What is your brain/body’s chemical equation made up of?
  • prevents large molecule substances from passing through to the brain
  • prevents low lipid (fat) soluble molecules from penetrating into the brain (some drugs rapidly cross through into the brain)
  • slows down highly charged electrical molecules

Identifying Factors That Damage or Compromise Your Blood Brain Barrier

There are many factors with the potential to compromise your blood brain barrier – altering your brain/body chemistry and normal brain function.

bbb1

http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/bbb.html

  • high blood pressure opens/compromises the BBB.
  • developmental challenges (pollution/distress in utero and birth) compromise the BBB
  • microwaves open/compromise the BBB
  • high concentrations of substances (e.g. alcohol, drugs, chemicals) in the blood can open/compromise the BBB
  • brain/body pollution can open/compromise the BBB
  • environmental toxins (e.g. neurotoxins – found in fragrances, air fresheners, laundry, personal care and cleaning products, air pollution) can open/compromise the BBB
  • radiation opens/compromises the BBB
  • infection and viruses open/compromise the BBB
  • inflammation opens/compromises the BBB
  • restricted blood flow compromises the BBB
  • trauma compromises the BBB
  • chronic stress hormone production compromises the BBB

HOW’S YOUR BLOOD BRAIN BARRIER DOING?

Did you know that lead can cross a healthy blood brain barrier? I found that out the hard way. I pumped leaded gasoline at my father’s service station as a teenager. Lead has been connected to depression and memory difficulties. Imagine what other unwanted substances might be crossing your blood brain barrier regularly.

Where does all the lead come from? Check out these sources http://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/lead/sources.htm.

Where do all the other harmful substances come from that can harm and pass through your blood brain barrier?http://www.mybodycanhealitself.ca/bodypollution.pdf

How do you get lead and other harmful substances out? You’ll find out at the end of the post.

Protecting and Repairing Your Blood Brain Barrier

Now that you understand the importance of a healthy blood brain barrier to mental health, you will be better equipped to start implementing strategies that can cure your condition.

The second step requires implementing strategies to protect and repair your BBB and rewrite your mental health equation. Collectively these will provide you with the natural cures to restore your mental health.  In my personal journey to become 100% depression free,  I used specific natural strategies and supplements therapeutically.  The natural strategies included detoxification, mind/body healing, neuromuscular biofeedback, visualization, rejuvenation, herbs, nutrition, goal setting and changing limiting beliefs into surpassing beliefs – a holistic health methodology.

Certain vegetables have been shown to help repair the blood brain barrier. I provide a customized holistic protocol email consultation package which includes diet changes to promote blood brain barrier repair. Contact me to get started.

Dealing with depression requires a good understanding of exogenous and endogenous contributing factors. Each mental illness equation shares common denominators that can be eliminated using a holistic health approach.  Learn more  about these. My holistic protocol which includes information on detoxification and natural strategies for better health can be found in my book THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION

Targeted, customized visualizations like body scan visualization #10 in THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION can help you restore your blood brain barrier and brain chemistry. The blood brain barrier is semi-permeable and should only allow some things to pass through.  Think of it like a sieve that is only supposed to allow some things to pass.  Damage can allow other substances to pass through causing unwanted symptoms.  You may have noticed unwanted symptoms after eating out or spending time in areas with poor air quality. This could indicate that you have a compromised blood brain barrier.

Essential oils can help to repair the blood brain barrier and the brain for healthy brain function. I provide a customized holistic protocol email consultation package which includes essential oil therapy and other natural strategies (including specific supplement recommendations) necessary to promote blood brain barrier repair. Essential oils that help the brain for any conditions:

brain essential oils

Frankincense is the essential oil of choice for any kind of brain disorder. Frankincense has a molecular makeup that includes sesquiterpenes, that is able to cross the blood/brain barrier. These sesquiterpenes stimulate the limbic system of the brain and other glands within the brain, promoting memory and releasing emotions. There are additional oils that help to promote brain repair. I provide a customized holistic protocol email consultation package which includes essential oil therapy to promote blood brain barrier repair. Contact me to get started.
