MENTAL HEALTH by DESIGN: How to Edit Your Mental Health Equation for Improved Mental Health

Updated September 8, 2020

mentalhealthequation

Every person’s mental health equation, including yours, is uniquely different and yet every person’s mental health equation shares common denominators.

According to Madhuleena Roy Chowdhury‘s Positive Psychology article What is the Mental Health Continuum, “The mental health continuum is a range having mental health and mental illness at the two extreme ends.  The shift between the distinct markers of healthy point, problem point and disorder point are determined by a person’s internal and external faculties.” Below if the image from Madhuleena’s article.  Please visit the link and read.

continuum

I have always been envious of people who appeared to be able to consistently stay at the healthy, happy end of the continuum.  After years of experiencing a range of mental health continuum points for a variety of reasons, and recovering from depression using a variety of strategies, I am able to stay close to the healthy, happy point of the mental health continuum most of the time. It is much easier to be resilient during times of stress when one is healthy and happy. Greater resilience during challenging times is my ongoing quest. To start a return to, and stabilization at the healthy, happy point of the mental health continuum; one needs to look at their mental health equation and the common denominators they share with others.

A common denominator is a commonly shared theme or trait.  You will no doubt have heard people speak about the common denominators for success in business, relationships and people who live to be healthy past 100.  A common denominator is also a common element in a mathematical equation. In math class you learn to rewrite your math equations to change the undesirable answer. When things are not adding up in your life you may be prompted to start subtracting out potential causes; analyzing and rewriting your mental health equation by subtracting out contributing factors and adding in supports, can help you to restore and maintain better mental as well as physical health.

In the midst of the additional uncertainties and stressors added to our lives and the lives of the people around us due to the Covid-19 pandemic, adding in additional supports would be a good place to start to restore and maintain better mental health. These have been really challenging times for all of us, setbacks are not uncommon, especially in the ability to cope with stress and maintain resilience.  According to the Psychology Today article Pandemics and Psychoneuroimmunology, our mental state can be a determining factor in how significantly we are affected by the pandemic.

“Viruses use the same receptors as neuropeptides to enter into a cell, and depending on how much of the natural peptide for a particular receptor is around and available to bind, the virus that fits that receptor will have an easier or harder time getting into the cell. Because the molecules of emotion are involved in the process of a virus entering the cell, it seems logical to assume that the state of our emotions will affect whether or not we succumb to viral infection.” Dr. Candace B. Pert

“COVID-19 reminds us to include a discussion of psychological factors in being able to fight off the virus by maintaining optimal immune functions. Staying positive, remembering to laugh, and maintaining hope and optimism may be crucial to maintaining a strong immunity and our very survival. We must also grieve the tragic loss of so many who have fallen from this deadly virus.” James F. Zender, PhD, The New Normal

There are many free mental health supports available, depending on where you live. I have listed several supports at the end of this post. Subtracting out some of the mental health challenging factors, like those I highlight below, may have to wait until a later time after isolation, when your regular healthcare provider and other qualified practitioners can guide you. You now have the time to do your research and planning, make diet changes, add in exercise and mind body strategies to help you in your quest to sustain a healthier, happier mental health state and ‘thrive in spite of everything’.

During times of Covid challenges I often think of Roberto Benigni’s Life is Beautiful,  where “a father interprets the world for his young son upon their arrival in the bestial barracks of a Nazi concentration camp. In the horror of a concentration camp, the father’s task is impossible but simple: invent a story that will help him and his son survive”.

During a very dark mental health continuum point in my life, a caring family member suggested I read Man’s Search for Meaning. It seemed like a very depressing pick at the time. “In Man’s Search for Meaning, psychiatrist and neurologist Viktor Frankl (1905-1997) wrote about his ordeal as a concentration camp inmate during the Second World War. Interestingly, he found that those who survived longest in concentration camps were not those who were physically strong, but those who retained a sense of control over their environment.but turned out to be just what I needed.” I am so grateful for the recommendation.

How do you rewrite your mental health equation?

You can rewrite your mental health equation by subtracting out or cancelling your well-being challenging contributing factors and adding in strategies to help eliminate your depression and other mental challenges. The combined approach strives to ‘right the wrongs’ that may be a part of your depression/mental health equation; allowing your body’s natural healing mechanisms to heal your brain and restore your brain chemistry and function to normal. It took me years of research and trial and error strategies, while also working on my multiple physical health equations to achieve the improved health results I have. This post focuses on the mental health equation factors that I and my clients have addressed to achieve improved mental health.  Obviously brain damage and past trauma are additional factors that will need to be addressed with additional medical and psychological supports. This is a process that will take time. It is not as simple as the equation image below.

lifemath

I suffered from depression at various times in my life.  My understanding and definition of what was possible about being depression free were limited due to everything I was told and read. My father had suffered from depression and I was told once I had two episodes of depression in my life I would probably need to be on medication for the rest of my life for it. I changed my definition of what I believed was possible, I am a bit of a rebel; and then looked for ways to make it happen. I analyzed my depression equation, started researching and then started editing my depression equation, subtracting out potential causes and adding in supports. I am now 100% depression free and have been for many years. I do not take medication or regular supplements for depression. Not only that, I feel upbeat and happy and blessed! I am finally at the envied, happy end of the mental health continuum. My quest now is becoming more resilient using strategies to be better prepared to cope with the unexpected challenges that will come my way, like pandemics.

You may need to rewrite your definition of what is possible in terms of becoming depression free so that your brain and body are on the same page. This may require a paradigm shift. Every person may not be able to stop taking medications, but you may be able to reduce your medications and improve your mental health by editing your mental health equation.

Do not reduce or stop taking your prescribed medications or start editing your depression equation without the supervision of your regular healthcare provider.

“According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway. Because bees don’t care what humans think is impossible.”[1]

Understanding the Genetics and Environmental Factors of Your Depression Equation

Although you may have a family history of depression or mental illness, it does not mean that you will have or continue to suffer mentally.  Genetic predispositions are inherited but do not always become expressed, allowing for a condition, unless they are turned on by environmental factors. Although you cannot subtract out genetic factors, you can prevent genetic predispositions from activating due to environmental influences, preventing the related health challenge.

Environmental factors or external factors, like your lifestyle, including work and life balance, diet, exercise, pollution and physical, mental, emotional and spiritual stressors can affect your brain chemistry and brain function, mood, resilience, ability to cope and stay positive. You have control over most of these factors and for those out of your control, there are supports that you can add in to cancel out or minimize their negative impact.

Your general health, diet, nurture, supports, medications and habits can affect your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. This is an area where you may have to make some hard and radical decisions, which should only be considered and implemented under the care of qualified health practitioners.

“After completing an enormous study, scientists have dismissed claims that single gene variants, or even a small group of them, can dictate susceptibility to depression. Instead, they suggest that any genetic risk for depression likely arises from very large numbers of variants, each contributing a small effect.”

“In an American Journal of Psychiatry paper, the team concludes that early theories about ‘depression candidate genes’ are wrong and that studies identifying them have likely done no more than produce ‘false positives’.”[2]

“A genetic predisposition (sometimes also called genetic susceptibility) is an increased likelihood of developing a particular disease based on a person’s genetic makeup. A genetic predisposition results from specific genetic variations that are often inherited from a parent. These genetic changes contribute to the development of a disease but do not directly cause it. Some people with a predisposing genetic variation will never get the disease while others will, even within the same family.”[3]

“However, it appears that even with a genetic predisposition to mental illness during birth, resistance to mental illness is possible. Resilience is heightened because of a favorable nurturing environment after birth or perhaps due to exercise. People should create enriched environments where they help and support each other, exercise actively, and gain resistance to stress.”[4]

Environmental pollutants can become a part of your body pollution and mental health equation. As a teenager I pumped leaded gasoline at my father’s gas station. The combination of toxic gas ingredients negatively affected my brain.

Benzene, toluene, and xylene; and the additives ethanol, methanol, and methyl tertiary butyl ether are efficiently absorbed through the lungs so living, working and commuting in polluted environments can add to your toxic load.

Reported in the Meet the Neurotoxins: The Toxins That Threaten Our Brains post “Leading scientists recently identified a dozen chemicals as being responsible for widespread behavioral and cognitive problems. But the scope of the chemical dangers in our environment is likely even greater. Why children and the poor are most susceptible to neurotoxic exposure that may be costing the U.S. billions of dollars and immeasurable peace of mind.”

I started to suffer from depression at that time.  While investigating my depression equation later in life, when I once again suffered from depression after off gassing of a new house, I made the environmental pollution connection and implemented whole body detoxification, a two step detox; through natural strategies to deal with my accumulated body pollution.

From Architectural Digest – What You Need to Know About Off-Gassing: Even after an install, a project’s furnishings and finishes can leach harmful chemicals into the air for years through a process called off-gassing. Here’s how you can combat it.

To fully understand the impact of dangerous off gassing check out Harmful Toxins in Living Environments and their Hazardous Chemical Impact.

“There are nearly 1000 substances which have been identified as having, or possibly having, neurotoxic effects. Exposure to sufficient amounts of these chemicals, either in the work place or elsewhere, can cause neurological and brain problems. Likewise chronic exposure (long term, lower level exposure) can also have damaging effects.” Toxic Exposures – Brain Injury

I knew that my brain had been negatively affected by many toxins, adding to my brain and body pollution, and compromising my brain function. At some point in my exposure history my blood brain barrier became compromised, allowing later toxins to easily enter my brain. Do you know what your body pollution looks like? Read my blog post on body pollution to find out.  A combination of whole body detoxification and BodyFeedback Interview and Therapy treatment for a client, eliminated a disabling 50+ year caterpillar phobia. After understanding that my compromised blood brain barrier allowed toxins to readily enter my brain, nervous system and body I learned the importance of protecting it. Read more at my blog post: NATURAL CURES: Protecting and Repairing Your Blood Brain Barrier to Restore Mental Health. If you are having mental health issues, your blood brain barrier may be allowing toxins to pass through into your brain and affecting your overall health.

According to The Brain’s Way of Healing by Dr. Norman Doidge, reporting on a NASA “self training” technique to prevent epilepsy, “astronauts were getting epilepsy from their exposure to rocket fuel”.

“A cocktail of harmful toxic chemicals has been detected in every person tested in a cross Canada study of pollution in people.”[5]

“In this sample of young adults with low levels of lead exposure, higher blood lead was associated with increased odds of major depression and panic disorder. Exposure to lead at levels generally considered safe could result in adverse mental health outcomes.”[6]

“Lead exposure in childhood appears to have long-lasting negative effects on mental health and personality in adulthood, according to a study of people who grew up in the era of leaded gasoline. The findings reveal that the higher a person’s blood lead levels at age 11, the more likely they are to show signs of mental illness and difficult personality traits by age 38.”[7]

“Vert and colleagues in Barcelona identified significantly increasing rates of depression among those exposed to a range of air pollutants, with doubling odds of depression”

“Emergency department attendance for depressive episodes were significantly higher for particular combinations of air pollutants at certain times”[8]

What we eat effects not only our physical, but also mental health. Although you may not have been advised to look at your diet when presenting at your doctor’s office with symptoms of depression, anxiety or stress; research has shown that diet is a key factor in brain health.  I was eating a fairly healthy but limited diet during my major period of depression due to food allergies.  Study through a Nutritional Consulting course provided me with an in depth knowledge of nutrition, detoxification pathways and health recovery.

“Few people are aware of the connection between nutrition and depression while they easily understand the connection between nutritional deficiencies and physical illness. Depression is more typically thought of as strictly biochemical-based or emotionally-rooted. On the contrary, nutrition can play a key role in the onset as well as severity and duration of depression. Many of the easily noticeable food patterns that precede depression are the same as those that occur during depression. These may include poor appetite, skipping meals, and a dominant desire for sweet foods. Nutritional neuroscience is an emerging discipline shedding light on the fact that nutritional factors are intertwined with human cognition, behavior, and emotions.”[9]

“Studies have compared ‘traditional’ diets, like the Mediterranean diet and the traditional Japanese diet, to a typical ‘Western’ diet and have shown that the risk of depression is 25% to 35% lower in those who eat a traditional diet. Scientists account for this difference because these traditional diets tend to be high in vegetables, fruits, unprocessed grains, and fish and seafood, and to contain only modest amounts of lean meats and dairy. They are also void of processed and refined foods and sugars, which are staples of the ‘Western’ dietary pattern. In addition, many of these unprocessed foods are fermented, and therefore act as natural probiotics.”[10]

In a new study published in the July 15, 2020, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, study author Ka He, M.D., Sc.D., of Columbia University in New York states “Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to fight inflammation and maintain brain structure in aging brains. They have also been found to reduce brain damage caused by neurotoxins like lead and mercury. So we explored if omega-3 fatty acids have a protective effect against another neurotoxin, the fine particulate matter found in air pollution.”  When my brain was extremely challenged after the off gassing of our second new build I searched relentlessly for solutions and found someone (not medical or scientific) who claimed that the Omega 3 resolved their depression so I started taking large doses of non GMO unbleached lecithin and after some time noticed improvement.  I now understand why it helped, having read this research.  I recommend that my clients take Omega 3 daily for improved mental health. For more on the steps I took to depression free read  my how to guide, The Whole Person Well-being Equation.

Dr. Emily Deans, in her Psychology Today article, reports that randomized controlled trials show that the right diet can improve depression.[11]

Stress, stress idling and stress sensitization can be contributing factors to depression, anxiety, compromised coping and resilience; factors in the mental health equation. Achieving a strong resilience and ability to cope with what life presents takes a lot of work, I am still a work in progress. Do not lose hope! These qualities are key to improving your mental health equation. Implementing ongoing stress management strategies throughout your life is important to living depression free and enjoying  good, consistent mental health and ability to cope and roll with life’s challenges. Hopefully stress management will be the first ‘go to’, as well as diet changes and exercise that doctors prescribe to people presenting with anxiety, depression and stress symptoms; not just a suggestion or after thought. You can read more about the impact of stress in my blog post on stress title STRESS IDLING & SENSITIVITY: A Modern Day Health Challenge.

“If the stress is continued or prolonged, it can leave adverse effects on body’s immune, cardiovascular, neuroendocrine and central nervous systems. When chronic stress goes untreated it can result into serious disabilities like insomnia, weakened immune system, high blood pressure, anxiety and muscle pain. It can also play a role in developing major disorders like depression, heart disease and obesity.”[12]

“Life is a balance of holding on and letting go!” – Rumi

Sometimes past stress, trauma, memories and history are unable to release from the brain or body, resulting in ongoing unwanted symptoms or triggering. For one client, a 50+ year debilitating caterpillar phobia was dislodged using a combination of whole body detoxification and energy tapping to break the connection. Body scan visualizations and energy tapping can be combined to encourage the body to dislodge past stressors, traumatic events, memory and history, eliminating symptoms.  Find out how to customize and practice body scan visualizations in my book. Visualization is just one of the body’s amazing abilities.

The human body was created with many amazing abilities, often referred to as ‘the doctor within’. Understanding and utilizing those often misunderstood and mostly forgotten powers is crucial to well-being and eliminating depression. Exploring ways to continually develop and maintain strength of mind and body will enable you to better endure the demands of life with grace and confidence; ultimately allowing you to stay focused on the pursuit of meaningful goals. Change and fortitude often start with a healthy dose of fear. Sometimes fear comes through a ‘wake up call, something is really wrong’, like the debilitating symptoms of depression.

“Mind-body interventions (MBIs) such as meditation, yoga and Tai Chi don’t simply relax us; they can ‘reverse’ the molecular reactions in our DNA which cause ill-health and depression, according to a study by the universities of Coventry and Radboud.”[13]

You can find the summarized strategies that I used to edit my physical and mental health equations to improve my health, eliminating depression, toxicant induced loss of tolerance (TILT), multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), stress sensitization and multiple food allergies; in my book The Whole Person Well-being Equation. You can also find out about the additional supports that I use through my blog posts and social media pages which are listed at the end of this post.

If you are not one of the lucky people who finds themselves at the happy end of the mental health continuum daily, with superior resilience; do not despair. Many people find themselves regularly sliding back and forth to different points on the mental health continuum during challenging times. Set backs happen when it comes to dealing with anxiety, depression, coping with stress and achieving resilience. The goal, obviously, is to stay closer to the healthy, happy end of the continuum all the time.  The strategies, information and resources I have provided can help you with that goal, they have helped my clients reach their mental and physical health goals. Success in an endeavour is about consistent commitment.  Keep putting one foot in front of the other when you feel despair, keep moving forward, even if only by baby steps. You can do this!

There are going to be many hard days in life. I have had many and know life will continue to come with challenges and hard days. Consider creating a mantra to help you on the hard days that feel mentally and hope challenging.  Check out my mantra in my blog post SURVIVAL MANTRA: Words to get you through the hard times

Escaping to, immersing in and eating from nature and botanical experiences brings so many body, mind and spirit benefits!

Using distractions as therapy has been one of my ongoing tools for coping with life’s challenging days. Although I no longer suffer from depression and my brain functions better than it has in year, I still use distraction therapy on days when life’s challenges mount, like those that present from the multiplier effect of having a large family and the present day challenges presented by the pandemic. There are many mind immersing ‘distraction therapy’ tools available. Follow my posts where I share some of my favourites.

These are very difficult times and existing mental health and addiction challenges can be magnified. If you have people in your life who are exhibiting threatening mental health behaviours towards themselves or others, it is important to take action through setting boundaries and incident reporting.  Failure to take note and action could result in serious consequences for you or other people, including your loved ones. The recent events in Nova Scotia highlights the seriousness of radical changes in a person’s mental state that led to the death of so many innocent people. Utilize and recommend the mental health supports that are readily available during the pandemic, through governments and community services. Check out the resource list below.

I started researching for my book and writing while I was recovering. My brain and some of my body are still ‘a work in progress’. There is more editing and healing to do, in terms of my 100% brain function goals. One of my left over quirks/deficiencies from my past chemical brain damage, is that while having a conversation a word will occasionally come out in a sentence that is not the word I intended.  Not sure where that comes from. My brain substitutes an alternate, unrelated word for the word that I intended. People tend to be a bit confused at times, as well as me.  Sometimes adds a bit of humour! It isn’t always easy to laugh at oneself when one malfunctions, physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. You will find many blog posts that I have written throughout my recovery from physical and mental challenges on my blog.  At the very end of this post I have listed several blog posts about brain challenges, so scroll to the bottom of this post to read more.

Wishing you whole person well-being!

SURVIVAL MANTRA: Words to get you through the hard times

flores-no-ceu-azulpdthriving

As the year wraps up and a new one approaches, taking stock can sometimes overwhelm us. In spite of what life has presented you this year, there are many strategies that can help you through the difficult moments and days. Creating a ‘survival’ mantra, words of encouragement can help you whenever you feel down or bad or hopeless. Referring to that mantra in times of need can be one of your ‘go to’ survival life lines. I have a book with a label on the front that I have written ‘Inspiration’. It is my ‘go to’ for pick me up words of encouragement when I need them. In my book I have a collection of words from the many inspirational books that I have read.

Inspiration

In Hinduism a mantra is a word or formula, as from the Veda, chanted or sung as an incantation or prayer. Mantras can be simple or melodic phrases with spiritual interpretations such as a human longing for truth, reality, light, immortality, peace, love, knowledge, and action.[3][11] Some mantras without literal meaning are musically uplifting and spiritually meaningful.[6]

If you find yourself in need of a ‘life line’ on your challenging days, I recommend that you start collecting inspirational phrases from books, social media and magazines and create your own personal ‘pick you up’ self-help mantra. The mantra below is the one that I created as this challenging year comes to an end. I choose to thrive in spite of everything!

Thriving In Spite of Everything

I am human,

Imperfect as all humans are,

Not created to be a robot,

That functions perfectly.

I come with many flaws,

Prompting daily maintenance,

To restore God’s original defaults,

In keeping with His human creation plan.

I am human,

I reluctantly embrace my inborn potential

For imperfection,

While honouring my

God given innate goodness.

Seeing with gratitude daily,

A human more full

Than empty of good.

I am human,

A work in progress,

Making time ongoing,

To create a better, healthier version of me,

Utilizing my ‘creator installed’ amazing abilities

And quality self-care,

To honour my maker with my efforts

As an ‘unfinished work’.

I am human,

I will not be defeated by what knocks me down.

I will get back up,

Staying on my path to thrive in my beautiful life.

THE GIFT of a Healthy Brain: Strategies to Protect and Restore Optimum Brain Function

changeyourbrain

Updated February 25, 2020

As many of my friends, family and clients know, I have had my brain challenges.  The good news is that my brain now functions better than it ever has in the past and I intend to make sure it stays that way. My brain and I are a work in progress, just like a play dough creation. Some people’s brain challenges are visible while others are well hidden. Either way, there may be times when your brain may have some setbacks. Do not despair or lose hope. Wherever you are on your brain recovery, the information and strategies that I share about my recovery can help you. Brain neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to adapt and change. The brain is plastic at all ages (think playdough)

playdough

so we can continue to learn and create changes in our brains and nervous systems throughout our lives. You can change your brain by implementing strategies that increase brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) which plays an important role in neuronal survival and growth, serves as a neurotransmitter modulator, and participates in neuronal plasticity, which is essential for learning and memory. As you read on you will find research about essential oils that promote the increase of BDNF naturally.  While a healthy, active lifestyle is a main contributing factor for increasing BDNF naturally, there are many researched botanicals, foods and herbs that also naturally promote increased levels of BDNF.

My past periods of depression and compromised brain function were the result of various factors including, body and brain pollution from toxins, toxicant induced loss of tolerance (TILT), stress and stress sensitization, and lack of life balance and resilience.  As a teenager I pumped leaded gasoline at my father’s gas station.  I started to suffer from depression at that time.  While investigating my depression equation later in life, when I once again suffered from depression after off gassing of a new house, I made the environmental pollution connection. You can read about how I was affected by all of these in my blog posts and website ‘about‘ page. I am grateful for the information, guidance and natural strategies that have helped to restore my brain and body health.

With the looming statistics for depression, dementia (which my mother suffered from) and Alzheimers, and the deep compassion I feel for anyone who has brain challenges;  my focus moving forward is on preventing mental decline as I age and helping others to do the same.

What did it take to restore and improve my brain to better health? What am I doing to protect my brain?

  • Learning and understanding the impact of brain and body pollution
  • Dealing with brain and body pollution is a primary ‘must do’ using natural and added detoxification aids (whole body detoxification method using Botanical Spa Therapy)
  • Avoiding brain (including blood brain barrier) compromising factors
  • Adapting a healthy plant based diet and avoiding processed foods.  I also eat wild caught fish and organic free range eggs.
  • Drinking filtered water
  • Ongoing assessing, restoring and maintaining of life balance
  • Regular walking in green spaces
  • Regular yoga and tai chi exercises
  • Meditation and meditation music while visualizing my calm, happy place- this has been extremely beneficial during times of distress and while sleeping.
  • Prayer – visually handing over my basket of concerns for me, my family, my clients, the needs of the world, daily to my higher powers, my God, for healing, protection and guidance.
  • Grounding – my daily affirmation “I choose to remain cool, calm and grounded in spite of everything (or specific)” while visualizating my Wisdoms from a Tree painting. Seeing myself grounded by deep roots and swaying like the branches of a tree in the midst of life’s challenges. I am a greater support for myself and others if I remain grounded and resilient. This also prevents feelings of anxiety and distress and an itchy HPA stress response.

The preceding information may seem daunting.  It took me 10 years of research and trial and error strategies to make major gains in my health.  I now feel healthy, energetic and more resilient. I have condensed all of the information and resources that brought me to ‘my healthier brain and me’ and you can use my holistic protocol (self help guide), website and blog post to achieve your “healthier brain” and ‘healthier you’.  It works! News – Medical Sciences:

Japanese scientists have isolated active compounds in several plant medicines. These techniques helped the scientists identify and isolate active compounds found in Drynaria rhizome, a plant medicine that can improve memory. It has been proven to reduce disease characteristics in mice models with Alzheimer’s disease.

A 2012 study shows that rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), a common plant used to distil essential oil, can also help improve cognitive performance in healthy adults. Also, rosemary can boost brain performance.

In another study in 2013, scientists found that rosemary may enhance the ability to remember events. Also, it helps people keep future tasks in mind. Since memory loss is one of the hallmark symptoms of dementia, this function could make rosemary oil and important component of therapy to combat dementia.

Scientists also found that six essential oils, namely thyme, rose, clove, eucalyptus, bergamot and fennel, are capable of suppressing the inflammatory COX-2 enzyme. The effect is similar to that of resveratrol, one of the important compounds that gives red wine its health benefits.

Of all the essential oils, thyme produces the highest reduction in COX-2 levels by about 75 percent. The other essential oils reduced the COX-2 level by 25 percent. COX-2 is an inflammatory enzyme that has been also linked to the development of AD”  https://www.news-medical.net/health/Aromatherapy-for-Dementia.aspx

Neuroquantology – Progress of Essential Oils in Prevention and Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease –

EO, as one of the effective constituents of natural plants, is more and more recognized by people for its medicinal value and health care value. Through the analysis of different pathogenic mechanisms of AD, the anti-oxidation of EO against acetylcholinesterase inhibition, Aβ depolymerization, free radical injury and the protection of PC12 injured cells, it can be seen that EO of various plants has the activity of preventing and treating AD. The use of EO has many kinds of ways, such as oral administration, fumigation, smearing and so on. Combined with its excellent anti-AD activity, EO has the potential value of developing natural drugs for the treatment of neurogenic diseases. At present, more studies on anti-AD activity of EO are ongoing, but we haven’t made clear the key components of many plants’ essential oil, the synergetic effect of each component in EO, and in-depth anti-AD mechanism, which needs more researches.   https://www.neuroquantology.com/index.php/journal/article/view/1583

HEALTH TRIGGERS: Managing What Sets You Off On A Daily Basis

triggered

My last post was on how to avoid dangerous substances.

HOW TO AVOID DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES: For ‘a healthier you’!

If you suffer from food allergies, TILT, EI, MCS, depression, migraines or other skewed body response physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually; my last post is a must read.

On a daily basis many people are triggered regularly by numerous triggers.  Believe it or not the triggers can be anything.  Your equivalent ‘little black box’ records real and perceived threats and history about many factors that have harmed you in the past.  In present day your body may mount a ‘skewed’ or abnormal response to similar triggers, real or perceived – leading to unwanted symptoms on any level.  Some triggers present physical symptoms while others may affect thinking, memory or brain chemistry. Some triggers send people into ballistic emotional responses.

You may know people who are affected by changes in barometric pressure, experiencing migraines or joint pain or others who are affected by the full moon. Why is every person not affected by changes in barometric pressure?

Using neuromuscularbiofeedback I have been able to assess my triggers on an ongoing basis and those of my clients, and work to stop or reprogram any ‘skewed’ or abnormal responses.  How do I do it?  There are several methods.  The best time to stop these triggered responses is to manage them during an episode or exposure.  Tapping sequences and changing the valuation that my and my clients’ body and brain have given the triggers, neutralizes them by changing the valuation over time.  Using these steps in combination with other holistic strategies I have been able to recover from EI, TILT, MCS, depression, food allergies and more.  It is also how I help clients to recover from unwanted trigger responses. You can achieve the same results by following my protocol.  Read more about my ‘trigger busing’ protocol in my blog post:

BOTANICAL SPA THERAPY: Whole Body Detoxification That Can Change Your Health

botanicalspatherapybookcoverSometimes, when I think about how sick I was in the past, it seems like another life or a dream.  It was a nightmare that never seemed to end.  I have my health back after environmental illness (EI), toxicant induced loss of tolerance (TILT), multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) and depression – all triggered by moving into a new home. It took me years of doctor’s visits and trial and error to restore my health.  I feel good on a daily basis and safe in all my environments.  That does not mean that all environments are safe for everyone. Most of my trial and error attempts to regain my health were natural as traditional medicine was not able to help me.

For those out there who are still suffering, do not give up.  The biggest change in my recovery came when I completed the botanical spa therapy detoxification. I had tried countless ingest-able detoxification products and never experienced the gains that I realized from the botanical spa therapy detoxification baths.   I designed the botanical spa therapy recipe using my knowledge of the medicinal properties of botanical plants, learned through my studies.  This is the one main natural strategies that has had the biggest impact in regaining my health and I see the same gains in my clients. I have had clients who have had chronic back pain for years who are now pain free as the result of completing the botanical spa therapy. If you have any type of chronic symptoms or conditions consider botanical spa therapy.

You can find my Botanical Spa Therapy whole body detoxification recipe and instructions in my book THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY: A Potential for Compromised Brain, Nervous System and Overall Health

The Good and Bad of Indoor Air Quality

From Visually.

Fall brings cooler temperatures yet maybe not cool enough to turn your furnace on. One of the challenges during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall is to maintain good indoor air quality. While a furnace is functioning there is usually a fresh air intake from the outside. During the shoulder seasons and for some all year, while you are using other forms of heating such as fireplaces, wood stoves, electric heaters (baseboards) or water boiler heating – your home is not receiving daily infusions of fresh air. The resulting accumulation of poor indoor air from painting, paint stripping, heating with kerosene heaters, cooking, daily activities or engaging in maintenance and hobby activities; can come with serious health challenges including compromised brain and nervous system function. To maintain optimum health it is important to lower the concentrations of indoor air pollutants in your home and to increase the amount of outdoor air coming indoors. So open your windows often, especially during shoulder seasons to clean your air and all year if your do not have a heating system with fresh indoor air intake. Run your furnace fan on auto to circulate the fresh air that you take in. Make sure your furnace has an external fresh air intake. Learn more about protecting indoor air quality at https://www.epa.gov/indoor-air…/improving-indoor-air-quality.

Protect your brain, nervous system and overall health by improving indoor air quality.

HEAVY METALS: Dangerous To Your Brain

getaluminumout

Heavy metals are a serious concern and found to be responsible for many environmentally related illnesses.

heavy-metal-toxicity

I work with many clients who have various health challenges including compromised brain function and memory. For each person that presents with compromised health I recommend various detoxification and healing strategies.  There are many natural substances that can bind with harmful toxic and foreign materials found in the brain and body. Once these have been detoxified from the body and brain, the body’s natural healing capacities can function unobstructed. Your brain can recover.

Aluminum is an extremely harmful substance often found in the brains at autopsy after an Alzheimers death. Aluminum is found in deodorants, foil, cooking utensils, air pollution, tap water and vaccines.

Doctors Are Now Warning: If you use aluminum foil, stop it or face deadly consequences!

This is an excellent video by a doctor on the subject: http://launch.newsinc.com/share.html?trackingGroup=69016&siteSection=americanoverlook&videoId=31638091

The first step in eliminating heavy metal related health challenges is to start avoiding heavy metals from everyday usages and exposures.

watercontaminants2

heavymetalindrinkingwater

The body has many detoxification abilities which may need some help.  Effective detoxification requires healthy liver function. Make sure you are drinking the right water to promote healthy natural detoxification. Learn more about what natural substances bind with toxic substances in my book THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION. You will find a chart of binding and detoxifying substances with research links.  Some essential oils taken internally can also promote detoxification of the harmful substances in your body.  Learn more by contacting me.

YOUR BODY CAN HEAL ITSELF: Follow My Road Map to Get There

UPDATED:  June 22, 2020

Looking for recent blog posts?  You will now find them at https://biturl.top/MBJnqu.

Sometimes I forget how ill I really was. The forgetting is a blessing for sure!

I am revisiting my multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), toxicant induced loss of tolerance (TILT), environmental illness (EI), chronic fatigue (CF), multiple food allergies, irritable bowel, depression, seasonal affected disorder (SAD), stress sensitization and spasmodic dysphonia ‘past diagnoses’ today.  I am often reminded about how severely ill and affected I was by these conditions when I get inquires from all over the world asking for help from those still suffering.

All of the preceding diagnoses (plus more) were given to me in the past. I suffered severely for many years and I now have good health and feel good. I can eat all foods and be safe in previously toxic environments, obviously avoiding those that everyone should where possible. Like all humans, I share their vulnerability to the challenges of microbes, ‘wear and tear’ to body parts and life’s stressors.

On my journey to good health I tried many strategies, always looking for ‘the cure’.  Like many people I read every article about the latest supplement and cures and spent a lot of money on trying them.  From today’s view point it is clear to see that one cannot regain their health by merely supplementing/adding on something; one must start at the very beginning. The holistic health approach to regaining health is a series of natural strategies that help your body and mind to ‘peel back the layers’ of past physical, mental and emotional health challenges to allow healing.

onionlayers

One of the most impactful strategies in my health recovery was a series of herbal baths which I used to detox my body pollution, a major health challenge which most of us have even newborns.

Body Burden:  The Pollution in Newborns

“Chemicals have replaced bacteria and viruses as the main threat to  health.  The diseases we are beginning to see as the major causes of death in the latter part of (the 1900’s) and into the 21st century are diseases of chemical origin.”

Dr. Dick Irwin, Toxicologist, Texas A&M University www.lesstoxicguide.ca/index.asp

During my recovery I had tried many detox remedies with minimal results. Through my studies of herbs I learned about the potential detoxification and healing abilities of herbs. I used that information to create a ‘botanical spa therapy’ herbal bath recipe.  My clients have had incredible health improvements, like I have, as a result of taking a series of these baths. I now recommend this as a first step to anyone who asks me for advice.  Whole body detoxification requires a two step detoxification process, stop adding to your body pollution and remove your existing body pollution. You can find the recipe and instructions for botanical spa therapy herbal baths in my book below. Make you botanical spa therapy baths well deserved ‘spa events’, add spa music, an natural scented beeswax candle, and a new book.

Regaining health requires implementation of a series of  ‘stop, start and change’ strategies. The biggest challenge, in ‘hind sight’ and from the successes of my clients has been knowing ‘what do you stop, start and change‘. That’s where my road map can help you.

As a holistic wellness practitioner I share my variety of holistic strategies with my clients, on my website, in my blog posts and through more detailed guidance in my booke-books and consultations.  The Whole Person Well-being Equation is a holistic ‘how to’ book of easy to follow steps that will guide you to improved health through education, natural strategies, intuition, belief, faith and prayer by promoting body, mind and spirit balance. The easy to read book provides coaching to help you know what you need to stop, start and change to restore your health. Learn how to get to the root cause of your symptoms and eliminate them, so that you can get on with your life and the pursuit of meaningful goals. Join satisfied clients who have used the steps to become symptom free. From one of my readers: “The workbook makes tangible what can be construed as spiritual healing into something that can be followed with your eyes and pencil. This helps in understanding and actually seeing what your body is doing; without only using intangible (potentially spiritual) reflections.” Aamir A., Gatineau, Quebec. More is possible in terms of your health and following the steps in this book will make it possible for you. Get started today on a healthier version of you, you deserve it.

In my Escape to the Farmacy posts I share my botanical inspirations and where available, the science behind the many easily acquired benefits gained from escapes to  nature, plants, herbs, green and botanically inspired decor and activities like art. I have always been drawn to trails in the woods, and retreat there as often as possible.  Living in Southwestern Ontario, the many deciduous trees drop their leaves in the fall, leaving the trails more open to the much sought after winter, life giving sunlight. When the weather is too uninviting to coax me outdoors, I retreat to the many botanically inspired art and décor projects that provide me with the embrace of nature that I so desperately desire. Join me as I share my botanically driven ‘escapes to the farmacy’ for an enviable dispensing of body, mind and spirit benefits through my blog posts.

EMBRACING CHANGE RETREATS: Designed For A Healthier You

EmbracingChangeRetreat1

“Without change there would be no butterflies”

Implementing positive changes in your life can transform your health.

To be able and willing to change you need to believe:

  • More is possible
  • Possible is doable by you

According to ‘the butterfly principle’ seemingly insignificant choices cause changes which lead to significant outcomes. Any changes you make in your present way of thinking, living and being have the potential to lead to significant improvements in your health and life.

EMBRACING CHANGE WORKSHOPS/RETREATS

Butterflies represent the ultimate change possible. Although you have missed the opportunity to attend the Embracing Change Retreat at the Butterfly Conservatory on September 27 & 28 – you have the opportunity to experience the same type of retreat at my personal residence in beautiful Rockwood, Ontario. Retreats are customized based on what you would like to learn or work towards for your ‘healthier you’.

These health promoting workshops/retreats can be customized to meet your needs/health challenges/well-being goals (Have it your way – design your retreat experience). The information, instruction and the resources you will receive are designed to:

  • help you to redefine your definition of what is possible for your health/recovery through a series of paradigm shifts
  • help you to identify and address (implement change) your health challenging thinking and beliefs
  • help you to identify and address (implement change) your health challenging issues and contributing factors – your symptom equation
  • understand and manage the impact of stress in your life
  • teach you food preparation and diet changes for healthy longevity, DNA repair and weight management
  • implement strategies to work with a diagnosis (e.g. food allergies, MCS, chronic fatigue, burn out, depression, cancer)
  • teach you the basics of muscle response testing MRT for protection (for newcomers) and neuromuscular biofeedback NMBF used in BodyFeedback™ Interview & Therapy to determine your ‘weak list‘, and assess your body’s health status (for experienced muscle response testing users) using my protocol and resources (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, etc). For those of you who know MRT this is a great opportunity to take it a step further and learn how to assess your own body status daily.
  • provide you with information and instructions on combining self help therapies and tools that combine the body’s amazing abilities for improved health; taking lessons from the Blue Zones (areas of the world where people live the longest) and spontaneous remissions (unexplained complete and sometimes immediate recovery after a terminal/hopeless diagnosis)
  • provide you with an opportunity (this option must be ordered when you register) to ‘make and take’ healthier personal care products (eg. deodorant, lip gloss)for a healthier you
  • provide you with an opportunity (this option must be ordered when you register) to ‘make and take’ an inspirational wall art project to inspire you
  • explore your life purpose for improved health – share your story or passion to inspire others (volunteer/mentor/blog/write/publish)

Dr. Bernie Siegel, author of A Book of Miracles and Faith, Hope & Healing, is a strong supporter of implementing change and practice for improved health.  “I know from my experience to make changes you have to show up to practice.”

Regardless of what your diagnosis or prognosis is/are, learning and using MRT and NMBF can be lifesaving.  It was for me and has been for my clients.  It provides you with crucial information on a daily basis, allowing you to avoid any harmful factors (determining your weak list); allowing your body to focus it’s energies on healing and repair instead of vigilance and reacting.

This workshop can change your life! All participants will receive a daily BodyFeedback Interview & Therapy session.  Listen to Mary’s testimonials (1, 2). If you are thinking about coming – come with an open mind. Your body has many amazing abilities, often forgotten or misunderstood, that have the potential to ‘change your life’!  You have more to gain than lose! Let me show you how to transform your health outcome!

CHANGE: A Well-being Requirement For A Healthier You

What do you believe is possible in terms of ‘a healthier you’?

This workshop can help you change what you believe is possible and provide you with the information and skills to make it doable for you.

Please check with your healthcare practitioner (There may be contraindications due to health status, age, medications or other factors) before submitting your commitment to attend.

NOTICE: This is a NO SCENT ENVIRONMENT event. Synthetic scents contain neurotoxins that interfere with muscle response testing and neuromuscular biofeedback. If you regularly use any of these synthetic scents (perfumes, air fresheners, scented candles, scented laundry or fabric softeners and scented body care products) stop using them for this event and for the sake of your health. Use 2 cups of baking soda to soak your clothing in overnight and then wash with an unscented natural laundry detergent and natural fabric softener.

SAMPLE WORKSHOP/RETREAT INCLUDES

  • All materials, accommodation and food
  • Instruction in MRT and NMBF for improved health and health protection
  • Daily – BodyFeedback™ Interview & Therapy Session to determine your ‘weak list ‘and to help restore balance, normal healthy responses and defaults.
  • An incredible opportunity to become ‘a healthier you’ in the presence of ‘like minded’ people in a safe environment ( I will be your personal ‘body guard’ – I know how terrifying it can be to take this step – I have been there).

Gerda Hammond commented on an upcoming retreat: “Looking forward to the workshop! Manifesting change in my life started with letting go of old beliefs and embracing new ways of thinking. Doing things differently, I am becoming a truer version of myself. Believing in the power of my body to heal itself has been difficult, but knowing power is not equal to force, changes everything. By observing nature and intuitions, life flows. I would recommend you take the step to opening your mind to changing the way you look at life and be part of the upcoming workshop. You can have a healthier and more fulfilling life, but it requires making a conscious decision to move forward in a different unconventional direction. You are in the drivers seat and Elisabeth Hines will help you with your journey to well being one step at a time. Regardless of your challenges, this workshop will give you something to think about and hopefully give you the courage to move forward to joyful living”.

Private and small group (6) retreats are available. Price depends on content, length of stay and number of people. Private bedroom and bath and shared bedroom and bath options are available.
