BRAIN CHEMISTRY DIFFERENCES AND FAMILY DYNAMICS

 familybanner

In a past conversation a woman commented on her grown up daughter’s ‘abnormal’ behaviour. I knew her daughter and my comment to her just slipped off of my tongue without thought;  “My children’s brains all work differently”. Having experienced many brain chemistry and brain function challenges personally in the past, and as a mother of five; I had a front row seat to a diverse range of mood and behaviour changes over many years. I use the image above to help remind me and my clients that members of the same family can have profound differences in brain function and chemistry, not necessarily mental illness, that are sometimes interpreted as ‘ridiculous’ or ‘unacceptable’ behaviour. There are of course extremes in mood and behaviour changes that are considered mental illness and require the help of a qualified professional.

If you or a friend or family member have every had any mental health or mood challenges you know that holiday seasons can magnify the differences in ability to understand, perceive, interact, decision make, function ‘normally’ and cope. Even without qualifying with a mental health diagnosis, a person’s normal brain function can be altered by a number of factors or triggers. Why is one family member so affected by changes that another is not?  Family dynamics are the patterns of relating, or interactions, between family members.  How do you work with the challenges that individual brain function and chemistry differences bring to family dynamics? Understanding the factors that affect brain function and chemistry can help.

Every person’s way of feeling and thinking and responding is based on a unique combination of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual factors. Day to day changes to your ‘normal’ life can translate into changes in brain function and chemistry.

The Whole Person Well-being Equation Graphic 2

WHAT-COULD-POSSIBLY-GO-WRONG

The holidays are a perfect example of how seemingly inconsequential factors can trigger a change in brain function and chemistry and subsequent mood and ability to cope or carry on. Do you notice a change in your brain function, ability to cope and mood during the holidays? Does a tune like ‘I’ll be home for Christmas’ or a happy Christmas movie trigger sadness due to the absence or loss of a loved one, possibly during the Christmas season?

Change in time zones, sleep interruptions, insomnia, stressors, lack of exercise or down time, life imbalance, grief and trauma all have the capacity to alter normal brain function and brain chemistry.

Restoring ‘normal’ brain function and chemistry can be accomplished by correcting the factors responsible for the upheaval and compensating for the chaos by adding in correcting and restorative measures.  Changing the valuation that your body and mind have given to past and present factors can change the way you respond physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. You can learn about these in my books THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION and DEPRESSION: Gone.

EMBRACING CHANGE RETREATS: Designed For A Healthier You

EmbracingChangeRetreat1

“Without change there would be no butterflies”

Implementing positive changes in your life can transform your health.

To be able and willing to change you need to believe:

  • More is possible
  • Possible is doable by you

According to ‘the butterfly principle’ seemingly insignificant choices cause changes which lead to significant outcomes. Any changes you make in your present way of thinking, living and being have the potential to lead to significant improvements in your health and life.

EMBRACING CHANGE WORKSHOPS/RETREATS

Butterflies represent the ultimate change possible. Although you have missed the opportunity to attend the Embracing Change Retreat at the Butterfly Conservatory on September 27 & 28 – you have the opportunity to experience the same type of retreat at my personal residence in beautiful Rockwood, Ontario. Retreats are customized based on what you would like to learn or work towards for your ‘healthier you’.

These health promoting workshops/retreats can be customized to meet your needs/health challenges/well-being goals (Have it your way – design your retreat experience). The information, instruction and the resources you will receive are designed to:

  • help you to redefine your definition of what is possible for your health/recovery through a series of paradigm shifts
  • help you to identify and address (implement change) your health challenging thinking and beliefs
  • help you to identify and address (implement change) your health challenging issues and contributing factors – your symptom equation
  • understand and manage the impact of stress in your life
  • teach you food preparation and diet changes for healthy longevity, DNA repair and weight management
  • implement strategies to work with a diagnosis (e.g. food allergies, MCS, chronic fatigue, burn out, depression, cancer)
  • teach you the basics of muscle response testing MRT for protection (for newcomers) and neuromuscular biofeedback NMBF used in BodyFeedback™ Interview & Therapy to determine your ‘weak list‘, and assess your body’s health status (for experienced muscle response testing users) using my protocol and resources (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, etc). For those of you who know MRT this is a great opportunity to take it a step further and learn how to assess your own body status daily.
  • provide you with information and instructions on combining self help therapies and tools that combine the body’s amazing abilities for improved health; taking lessons from the Blue Zones (areas of the world where people live the longest) and spontaneous remissions (unexplained complete and sometimes immediate recovery after a terminal/hopeless diagnosis)
  • provide you with an opportunity (this option must be ordered when you register) to ‘make and take’ healthier personal care products (eg. deodorant, lip gloss)for a healthier you
  • provide you with an opportunity (this option must be ordered when you register) to ‘make and take’ an inspirational wall art project to inspire you
  • explore your life purpose for improved health – share your story or passion to inspire others (volunteer/mentor/blog/write/publish)

Dr. Bernie Siegel, author of A Book of Miracles and Faith, Hope & Healing, is a strong supporter of implementing change and practice for improved health.  “I know from my experience to make changes you have to show up to practice.”

Regardless of what your diagnosis or prognosis is/are, learning and using MRT and NMBF can be lifesaving.  It was for me and has been for my clients.  It provides you with crucial information on a daily basis, allowing you to avoid any harmful factors (determining your weak list); allowing your body to focus it’s energies on healing and repair instead of vigilance and reacting.

This workshop can change your life! All participants will receive a daily BodyFeedback Interview & Therapy session.  Listen to Mary’s testimonials (1, 2). If you are thinking about coming – come with an open mind. Your body has many amazing abilities, often forgotten or misunderstood, that have the potential to ‘change your life’!  You have more to gain than lose! Let me show you how to transform your health outcome!

CHANGE: A Well-being Requirement For A Healthier You

What do you believe is possible in terms of ‘a healthier you’?

This workshop can help you change what you believe is possible and provide you with the information and skills to make it doable for you.

Please check with your healthcare practitioner (There may be contraindications due to health status, age, medications or other factors) before submitting your commitment to attend.

NOTICE: This is a NO SCENT ENVIRONMENT event. Synthetic scents contain neurotoxins that interfere with muscle response testing and neuromuscular biofeedback. If you regularly use any of these synthetic scents (perfumes, air fresheners, scented candles, scented laundry or fabric softeners and scented body care products) stop using them for this event and for the sake of your health. Use 2 cups of baking soda to soak your clothing in overnight and then wash with an unscented natural laundry detergent and natural fabric softener.

SAMPLE WORKSHOP/RETREAT INCLUDES

  • All materials, accommodation and food
  • Instruction in MRT and NMBF for improved health and health protection
  • Daily – BodyFeedback™ Interview & Therapy Session to determine your ‘weak list ‘and to help restore balance, normal healthy responses and defaults.
  • An incredible opportunity to become ‘a healthier you’ in the presence of ‘like minded’ people in a safe environment ( I will be your personal ‘body guard’ – I know how terrifying it can be to take this step – I have been there).

Gerda Hammond commented on an upcoming retreat: “Looking forward to the workshop! Manifesting change in my life started with letting go of old beliefs and embracing new ways of thinking. Doing things differently, I am becoming a truer version of myself. Believing in the power of my body to heal itself has been difficult, but knowing power is not equal to force, changes everything. By observing nature and intuitions, life flows. I would recommend you take the step to opening your mind to changing the way you look at life and be part of the upcoming workshop. You can have a healthier and more fulfilling life, but it requires making a conscious decision to move forward in a different unconventional direction. You are in the drivers seat and Elisabeth Hines will help you with your journey to well being one step at a time. Regardless of your challenges, this workshop will give you something to think about and hopefully give you the courage to move forward to joyful living”.

Private and small group (6) retreats are available. Price depends on content, length of stay and number of people. Private bedroom and bath and shared bedroom and bath options are available. Please email me at elisabethlhines@gmail.com with your desired retreat design and I will provide you with a quote.

MEMORY: Where, Oh Where, Have You Gone?

out of memory

The cartoon that I have selected above for this post has a double meaning.  Your brain/mind is like the operating system of your computer.  We all know how messed up our computers can get at times. We’ll, our brains/minds can also get messed up by a number of interfering/damaging factors – resulting in compromised brain computer memory.

I know that memory loss is no laughing matter.  My mother suffered from serious memory challenges – dementia – in her late 80’s. Our hope as a family was always that it never got to the point where our mother didn’t know us.  A fall in her 80’s where my mother broke 6 ribs, combined with her having no recall of the incident and prescribed limitations imposed due to the injury – has presented additional care challenges.

Memory loss is a sad reality that many people have to face as they watch their parents age. Many people even younger are experiencing memory issues. So what is going wrong? Do people who live in the ‘blue zones‘ of the world experience the same degree of compromised memory?

Memory involves three processes: encoding, storage and retrieval.  These processes are carried out by various parts of the brain. Obviously something is going ‘wrong’ in the brain – resulting in compromised memory.

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPROMISED MEMORY?

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG

WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT COMPROMISED MEMORY?

Scientific studies on Melissa oil for Alzheimer’s has provided positive results.  In latest human trials, aromatherapy using rosemary is an efficacious non-pharmacological therapy for dementia and may have some potential for improving cognitive function, especially in Alzheimer’s disease patients, due to its free radical scavenging activity.  Essential oil therapy is an important holistic therapy to add to your ‘well-being toolbox’ to help in your pursuit of ‘symptom free’ status. Check out the neuroprotective ‘memory protection’ essential oil recipe that I use.

Wishing you and yours optimum memory as you age!

Let me get you started on your essential oil therapy for memory improvement.

NATURAL CURES: Protecting and Repairing Your Blood Brain Barrier to Restore Mental Health

WHAT-COULD-POSSIBLY-GO-WRONG

Is Your Blood Brain Barrier Intact? Could It Be A Factor In Your Mental Health?

Mental illness is a scary condition. I have personally ‘been there’ several times.  One in 4 people will be affected by some kind of mental condition this year and 1 in 5 people will suffer from depression and anxiety. Those statistics are extremely concerning, mostly because these conditions can precipitate suicide.  My heart goes out to all persons who are affected by mental conditions, directly or indirectly.  Since I am now 100% free of depression; I feel compelled to share what I have learned – so that you can reap the same symptom free status. I work with clients with various health challenges including depression using my holistic protocol to help them eliminate their symptoms.

A healthy, properly functioning blood brain barrier is crucial to mental health. Understanding your blood brain barrier (BBB) is one of  the first steps to restore your mental health.

The blood brain barrier is made up of a layer of cells, including endothelial cells, that fit together tightly so that harmful and unwanted substances cannot pass out of the bloodstream. Some substances, like glucose, are allowed to pass through.

A healthy blood brain barrier:

  • protects the brain from ‘foreign and harmful substances’ in the blood, as well as hormones and neurotransmitters. These substances can alter brain and body chemistry. What is your brain/body’s chemical equation made up of?
  • prevents large molecule substances from passing through to the brain
  • prevents low lipid (fat) soluble molecules from penetrating into the brain (some drugs rapidly cross through into the brain)
  • slows down highly charged electrical molecules

Identifying Factors That Damage or Compromise Your Blood Brain Barrier

There are many factors with the potential to compromise your blood brain barrier – altering your brain/body chemistry and normal brain function.

bbb1

http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/bbb.html

  • high blood pressure opens/compromises the BBB.
  • developmental challenges (pollution/distress in utero and birth) compromise the BBB
  • microwaves open/compromise the BBB
  • high concentrations of substances (e.g. alcohol, drugs, chemicals) in the blood can open/compromise the BBB
  • brain/body pollution can open/compromise the BBB
  • environmental toxins (e.g. neurotoxins – found in fragrances, air fresheners, laundry, personal care and cleaning products, air pollution) can open/compromise the BBB
  • radiation opens/compromises the BBB
  • infection and viruses open/compromise the BBB
  • inflammation opens/compromises the BBB
  • restricted blood flow compromises the BBB
  • trauma compromises the BBB
  • chronic stress hormone production compromises the BBB

HOW’S YOUR BLOOD BRAIN BARRIER DOING?

Did you know that lead can cross a healthy blood brain barrier? I found that out the hard way. I pumped leaded gasoline at my father’s service station as a teenager. Lead has been connected to depression and memory difficulties. Imagine what other unwanted substances might be crossing your blood brain barrier regularly.

Where does all the lead come from? Check out these sources http://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/lead/sources.htm.

Where do all the other harmful substances come from that can harm and pass through your blood brain barrier?http://www.mybodycanhealitself.ca/bodypollution.pdf

How do you get lead and other harmful substances out? You’ll find out at the end of the post.

Protecting and Repairing Your Blood Brain Barrier

Now that you understand the importance of a healthy blood brain barrier to mental health, you will be better equipped to start implementing strategies that can cure your condition.

The second step requires implementing strategies to protect and repair your BBB and rewrite your mental health equation. Collectively these will provide you with the natural cures to restore your mental health.  In my personal journey to become 100% depression free,  I used specific natural strategies and supplements therapeutically.  The natural strategies included detoxification, mind/body healing, neuromuscular biofeedback, visualization, rejuvenation, herbs, nutrition, goal setting and changing limiting beliefs into surpassing beliefs – a holistic health methodology.

Certain vegetables have been shown to help repair the blood brain barrier. I provide a customized holistic protocol email consultation package which includes diet changes to promote blood brain barrier repair. Contact me to get started.

Dealing with depression requires a good understanding of exogenous and endogenous contributing factors. Each mental illness equation shares common denominators that can be eliminated using a holistic health approach.  Learn more  about these. My holistic protocol which includes information on detoxification and natural strategies for better health can be found in my book THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION

Targeted, customized visualizations like body scan visualization #10 in THE WHOLE PERSON WELL-BEING EQUATION can help you restore your blood brain barrier and brain chemistry. The blood brain barrier is semi-permeable and should only allow some things to pass through.  Think of it like a sieve that is only supposed to allow some things to pass.  Damage can allow other substances to pass through causing unwanted symptoms.  You may have noticed unwanted symptoms after eating out or spending time in areas with poor air quality. This could indicate that you have a compromised blood brain barrier.

Essential oils can help to repair the blood brain barrier and the brain for healthy brain function. I provide a customized holistic protocol email consultation package which includes essential oil therapy and other natural strategies (including specific supplement recommendations) necessary to promote blood brain barrier repair. Contact me to get started.

Essential oils that help the brain for any conditions:

brain essential oils

Frankincense is the essential oil of choice for any kind of brain disorder. Frankincense has a molecular makeup that includes sesquiterpenes, that is able to cross the blood/brain barrier. These sesquiterpenes stimulate the limbic system of the brain and other glands within the brain, promoting memory and releasing emotions. There are additional oils that help to promote brain repair. I provide a customized holistic protocol email consultation package which includes essential oil therapy to promote blood brain barrier repair. Contact me to get started.
