Volunteering, giving of your time, has been shown to have many health benefits. Research has shown that people who volunteer often live longer. Taking your focus from your own life and regularly directing your attention to a ‘good cause’ is good for you on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. Sometimes its as simple as getting out of your own ‘soap opera’ for a while, allowing your mind time off from all your personal challenges.
I have volunteered for many different organizations over the years. The opportunity to meet amazing people and give back in some way have helped me on my well-being journey.
There are no shortage of organizations looking for volunteers. Look for one that shares some of your interests.
Although I am a fairly new and not very active member, I joined the GRANNIES TO GRANNIES CAMPAIGN in Mississippi Mills. Because I am a grandmother, their cause was close to my heart. Shortly after I joined the group, I helped bake Christmas cakes for one of their fundraisers. The following is taken from the website information for the campaign.
“The Stephen Lewis Foundation launched the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign in March 2006, in response to the emerging crisis faced by African grandmothers as they struggled to care for millions of children orphaned by AIDS. What began with only a few groups of committed Canadian grandmothers has since evolved into a dynamic and responsive movement, made up of grandmothers and grandmothers working to mobilize support in Canada for Africa’s grandmothers.”
Check out the website www.grandmotherscampaign.org/ for information on a group near you.
Wishing you a very rewarding volunteer experience!
